ADDS BODY AND FULLNESS: Hair naturally loses volume and strength with age. Breakthrough age-defying Densilum Complex technology contains Ionène G and Perfecting Polymers to densify the hair fiber and provide visibly fuller-looking hair and added volume.

LUMINOUS, MULTI-DIMENSIONAL COVERAGE OF GRAY HAIR: Gray hair is the most visible sign of aging. Hair coloring then naturally becomes part of most women’s anti-aging routine. However, for natural results that make you look the best at your age, masking grey hair is simply not enough.

1.  I WANT PASTEL OR SILVER-COLORED HAIR, BUT MY HAIR IS DARK. IS IT POSSIBLE? AND WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FOR UPKEEP?

best violet metallic hair color salons nyc

Silver hair and cool pastel tones are always possible when you start as a blonde or have dark hair that is 100% natural.

First, your hair must be lightened enough so the pale color can stain it. For cooler colors like silver, violet, light blue, light gray or mint green, your hair color must be lifted to almost white. This is totally possible and works great if your hair is already bleached, highlighted blonde or is completely natural. It will take much longer to get natural darker colored hair light enough to take a pastel or silver color.

Warmer pastel tones like coral, pink, rose gold and lime green are a bit easier to achieve because the hair only needs to be lifted to a light yellow. These colors also tend to last a bit longer. Pastel hair is a commitment. Of course, it’s one we feel is worth it. The results are amazing! Once you have a creative color, we advise you to wash your hair just once or twice a week to help hold the color. Because the hair is bleached it needs shampoo much less frequently. Our clients come in once a month to have us refresh the color.

The brighter, darker or richer your purple, pink, or gray is when you leave the salon the longer the color will last. The pastel fades with each wash, but we love the way it looks as it does.

2. MY HAIR IS NATURALLY DARK OR HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY COLORED. CAN I GET BRIGHT COLOR ON THE FIRST TRY?

Naturally dark hair is super easy to get beautiful and bright the first try! With the help of OLAPLEX, bleach is no longer a scary chemical that damages natural hair. With it, we can lift your original color and give you stunning rainbow colors on that very day.

Previously colored hair (even grown and washed out for a whole year) can usually go really pretty and bright on the same day, unless the previous color is black or dark brown ESPECIALLY if it’s a box dye. In that case, we’d like to consult and make a plan with you. Maybe we can start with foils highlights or balayage highlights.

As professionally trained hairstylists, we can only give you what your hair can handle. Unfortunately, all hair is not created equal and results may vary. Generally we recommend coming in for two or three appointments to get hair to a bright blonde, white enough for that bright pink/green/purple/blue and red to show. Consultations are required and if you feel so inclined, we can always do a test strand.

3. MY HAIR HAS TO BE BLEACHED FIRST? WILL THAT DAMAGE IT?

When you lighten hair, you always blow up the cuticle a little bit. Depending on the condition of your hair you may notice only a bit more texture or a total change in the feel of your hair. We are here to talk you through all of this before we start. With the proper at-home care, like protein masques every other week and little-to-no heat styling, your hair won’t hate being lightened. It will feel different but many people love the new texture and body! Again, that is EXACTLY why we offer the OLAPLEX Treatment. It minimizes the damage up-to 90% sometimes 100% all depending on the hair and its current condition.

4. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I EXPECT TO COME IN FOR COLOR TOUCH-UPS?

Since those dreamy pastels and vibrant hues are vegetable dyes, the more often you wash the hair, the faster the color will come out. Most upkeep will be every four weeks. Whatever you do, don’t wait too long to get your color freshened. If you wait too long, the hair will have to be bleached twice and you will get a brassy band. No one wants that, right?

5. HOW DO I KEEP UP MY BEAUTIFUL NEW COLOR?

Start by washing your hair less frequently. Wash in cold to luke-warm water—never hot. Invest in a dry shampoo! There are many wonderful products to help hide those natural scalp oils in between washes. When you do wash your hair, make sure to use only sulfate-free products. Sulfates are the active ingredient in most shampoos and tend to strip color with their cleansing and sudsing effect.

Either way, you MUST extremely careful and cautious with the colorist that will give you the transformation because if it’s not done properly your hair will require a hair color correction.

Best Silver Metallic Hair Color Salons NYC. Best Pastel Hair Dye Salons NYC.

Best Silver Metallic Hair Color Salons NYC. Best Pastel Hair Dye Salons NYC. Silver, Gray, Smoky Gray, Lavender, Rose, Rose Gold etc…

Easily one of the hottest color trends of the moment, dyeing your hair gray is definitely a look that’s equal parts daring, and undeniably cutting edge. And with booming popularity online, just one look at the #grannyhair hashtag on social media is sure to serve up some major beauty inspiration instantly. Best Silver Metallic Hair Color Salons NYC!

best silver metallic hair color salons nyc

But unlike those gorgeous Instagram photos, which makes gray hair color seem so effortlessly cool, silver and gray shades take work to achieve and loads of dedication to maintain. And aside from possibly having to lift and tone your hair to the appropriate gray shade, multiple salon visits (and at-home upkeep) can be time consuming, not to mention costly.

The most important factor to consider before coloring your hair gray or any of the other pastel hues is your hair’s overall condition. If you shampoo everyday or use hot tools on a regular basis, you may not be a good candidate.

Despite the big upkeep though, don’t let us discourage you from trying this super cool trend out by any means. But before you head off to the salon, here’s some things to consider before trying the trend yourself.

Whether you decide to dye your hair smoky gray, gray, purple, rose gold or any of the other gorgeous pastel tones please know that those tones are NOT meant to look “natural” on any skin tone. They are just pop colors! Want natural tones? Stick to being a Brunette, Redhead or Blonde.

But unlike other fantasy colors like pink or blue, gray boasts a universally flatting appeal, especially since we all will become naturally gray at some point. This makes it a lot easier to pull such a shade off.

best gray silver metallic pastel hair dye salons nyc

KNOW THAT THE PROCESS IS TIME CONSUMING, EXPENSIVE AND CAN BE DAMAGING! To minimize the damage, we do offer the Olaplex Treatment and we do carry L’Oreal Pro-Fiber hair treatment line.

Coloring your hair gray, pastel or vivid tones is a two step process, also known as a double process color. The process, can take anywhere from three to eight hours to complete. Sometimes eight to ten hours. If you already dye your hair, the process could be even more complicated. The dyes could overlap, which can lead to a brassy tone. And, of course, darker hair colors will be harder to lift with bleach, so getting that creamy, silver shade will be even more time consuming for a brunette than a blonde.

The overall process of coloring your hair gray can be very harsh on the hair especially when you’re starting with darker hair. The hair needs to be completely pre-lightened to the pale blonde first, then the gray gets overlaid.

Although salon trips are crucial, maintaining your gray color at home is equally important. Being that gray tones tend to fade fast, it’s wise to start with a sulfate-free shampoo, which hydrates the hair, and is also safe on your color. Be sure to find anti-yellow conditioners and shampoos to help preserve silver tones.

Best Hair Salons In NYC For Highlights. Balayage vs. Foils Highlights

Best Hair Salons in NYC for Highlights. Balayage Highlights vs. Foils Highlights & What are lowlight.

ARE YOU ASKING FOR THE RIGHT KIND OF HIGHLIGHTS? In our many years as hair colorists, it surprised us to learn that a lot of women don’t really know the difference between a highlight and a lowlight, let alone the different techniques for achieving the former, arguably more popular, look. We are the Best Hair Salons in NYC for Highlights! Many know the terms for the processes — namely, foils and balayage — but they don’t often understand what’s involved in each one. Before you go to the salon seeking high or lowlights, arm yourself with some of the basics — and a photo!

“Highlights” is a general term that refers to strands of hair that are lighter than the base color they’re being laid upon. It’s commonly believed that a highlight is blonde, but actually a highlight only refers to a color that’s not as dark as the base strands. The size of the highlights, the level of lightness, the tone, and the placement are all left up to the colorist — after you’ve communicated the look you’re going for, of course. Highlights aren’t a one-size-fits-all, and neither is the way they are administered. Moreover, the type of highlight depends on a number of things: the look you want, the kind of hair you have, how blonde or how much lighter you wish to go. A rundown of the three main types of highlighting techniques, plus an explanation of lowlights, may help you decide what to ask for at your next color appointment.

best hair salons in nyc for highlights balayage

People with thick, heavy hair, who like the look of chunkier highlights with more contrast (a stripier, less all-over blonde), should look into balayage. A French word meaning “to sweep,” balayage actually refers to the sweeping motion produced by the brush when the colorist paints swatches of hair.

Balayage is a freehand technique in which swatches of hair are carved out from the whole head of hair and painted with a lightening agent. This is done in revolutions around the head, and each painted swatch is then covered in cellophane. As these highlights are less systematically placed, the resulting look is fatter highlights. By contrast, foil highlights — produce a more symmetrical head of highlights.

We prefer the balayage look when we want something more dramatic. We recommend it for clients looking for a casual, beachy look. Lighter tips and an almost ombré appearance help to define this look. But, balayage, which requires higher volumes of peroxide, may not be the right choice for everyone. Always talk to your stylist before diving into any new process.

Now, if you’re looking for a very symmetrical highlight, foils might be the way to go. For clients interested in more of an all-over blonde look, foil highlights which are administered on top of and underneath the hair, are an excellent option. Foils can blend more with your natural base color than balayage resulting in a more even distribution of lightening.

Foil highlights involve sectioning off hair and weaving strands — thick or thin depending on the look you’re going for — and painting them with a lightening agent before wrapping them in foil. The foil serves two purposes: It keeps the lightening agent from getting on the surrounding hair and it keeps the product moist so it doesn’t dry up and weaken. We prefer this technique for its exactness. It produces a much more controlled look than balayage and as a colorists we know precisely where the color is going and what shade of lightness will result.

best hair salons in nyc for highlights balayage nyc

In spite of some personal preference on the two techniques described above we believe that a skilled color artist can achieve many different looks with any technique or combination of techniques. Some stylists and their clients like the look that results from getting both high and lowlights.

Unlike highlights which are lighter than the base strands lowlights are darker strands of color that are woven into the hair that is lighter. This process typically produces depth and adds contrast when hair becomes overly light and one-dimensionally colored from being highlighted repeatedly. General oxidation and/or fading can occur from regular highlighting which is another reason someone might opt to even things out with lowlights.

A great technique to keep hair from becoming washed-out and monochromatic lowlights should also be monitored since over time your ends may become dark and muddy from over-processing. Greater than the decision you make on your hair style and color however is choosing your stylist.

And we’ve said it before but it bears repeating: Always bring a photo with you to the salon. We advise clients against using technical/professional terms because it’s simply not as effective as displaying a photo of the look they hope to achieve.

Nowadays when many girls want to add color to their hair they pick a pastel hue. And we get why. The palette is more daring than hair color trends like vacation hair or tortoise shell hair that aim to enhance your natural color — ’cause let’s face it taking your locks from a natural to cotton candy is gonna turn heads — yet it’s soft enough to not feel too rebellious. It’s that often-elusive sweet spot for taking your look to the next level. Best Grey Pastel Hair Dye Salons NYC!

Last year lilac was the hue to have with celebs like Nicole Richie and Kelly Osbourne leading the charge for all-over light purple locks. Rainbow hair also trended in 2015 and with dazzling multi-hued strands celebs like Rita Ora and Lily Allen made the case that one color just wasn’t enough. This year pink seems to the the pastel of choice — Hilary Duff, Julianne Hough and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting all went pink — so for now it’s safe to say bubblegum is the new bombshell. But what can we expect next?

The next big thing the trend is here too! Adding the smokiness to the colors is going to be it. Like adding gray into a pink to create a smokey pink. Kind of more metallic-y.

It turns out we’re already starting to see hints of this trend around Hollywood on a lot of the stars who’ve already taken the pastel plunge. Just recently, Hilary Duff did just that — mixing gray and pink — after her ocean-colored hair faded into a gorgeous dusty blue-green. Kelly Osbourne’s lilac pomp has always had a silvery shine to it. And when Nicole Richie deepened her purple locks to a dark teal, smokey blue streaks gave it dimension.

best silver grey metallic pastel hair dye salons nyc

If a smokey pastel mane sounds like the way you want to take your hair to the next level, there are a few ways to get the look — our Master colorist, Jacob Amin, has the lowdown. Girls who already have bright pastel locks can take the lazy girl approach to a smokier shade by washing their hair with clarifying shampoo to help fade the color (think: Hilary Duff’s mermaid green to seaweed tinge in just a few washes).

If you want to start from scratch — always with freshly bleached locks — and DIY the look, you can use whatever pastel pigment you want + silver or gray pigment and add the mixture into your shampoo or conditioner to create a hint-of-gray color. Or if you’re looking for a less experimental approach simply ask one of our L’Oreal Professionnel colorists for a very cool pastel color. Cool means that there is an ashy undertone to the color. Granny hair just got way chicer 🙂

Would you try out the next big pastel hair trend?

Be sure to find a salon that’s known for their color and come in with all the questions you have about dyeing your hair blonde. We strongly suggests scheduling a consultation with the person who is going to do your color and bring photos then if you feel comfortable make the change.

START OUT SLOWLY – Don’t rush. Although the change can be made in one day it’s healthier for your hair to take things slowly. We suggests using a few different techniques to make things look more natural. We would do balayage and/or foils and we HIGHLY recommend adding OLAPLEX that way you can get a little bit closer to the face and lighten the ends with an ombre and by using OLAPLEX you minimize the risk of hair damage. That way you can transition easier and you don’t have to put a lot of damage into your hair all at once.

SET ASIDE TIME AND MONEY – If you are interested in making the change overnight it is definitely possible. It’s just going to take some time and cost you a good chunk of your paycheck. WE think if you’re adamant on going for an extreme change in one day you could just book a couple of appointment times but it’s very doable. If you’re willing to sit through and pay for a few hours of bleaching then you can definitely do it.

PICK A BLONDE SHADE BASED ON YOUR NATURAL HAIR AND SKIN COLOR – Picking the right shade of blonde depends on your natural hair color and skin tone. The darker you are the more golden and warm tones you’ll have. If you’re more of a natural dark blonde or light brown then you should go for more of a cooler ashier tone. If you have porcelain skin you can take your blonde to a pale yellow brighter kind of beige-y blonde but if you’re more tan you might want to go more honey-toned.

PLAN ON GETTING A HAIRCUT AFTER – Dyeing your hair with bleach can cause a lot of damage again not to risk or compromise the hair and its integrity we HIGHLY recommend considering the OLAPLEX treatment so in order to keep your hair as healthy as possible schedule a haircut following your color. You always want to cut off your dead ends whenever you bleach them. It prevents the hair from breaking when you get a haircut right away.

MAINTENANCE IS KEY – Maintaining your beautiful blonde ‘do doesn’t just mean regular trips to the salon — keeping your hair shiny and healthy starts at home. When you bleach your hair blonde you definitely want to take care of it at home with a lot of conditioning treatments. Be careful with blow-drying because the more heat you put on your hair the more damage you cause. WE suggest finding a good shampoo and conditioner to keep the integrity of the hair. As far as how often you should go back to the salon Jacob Amin says every 6-8 weeks if you had a base color change and 8-10 weeks if you have blonde highlights.

DON’T BE AFRAID – The time is now ladies! We personally believe that anyone can be any shade of blonde if it’s done well. Anyone can be a blonde if it’s placed right if it’s an nice blonde if it’s even and if the hair is healthy.
