Best Hair Color Correction Salons NYC. Best Highlights Correction Salon NYC & Best Balayage Highlights Salons NYC. OOPS, Color Disaster?! We Will Fix It!

Entrusting someone with your hair color requires a leap of faith and even a bit of hope — which, every so often, is dashed by a botched color job. Maybe you requested ashy blond, but ended up with a brassy yellow that just looks off. Or perhaps you envisioned a medium-brown hue with a touch of caramel, but left the salon with an inky color that’s anything but warm chocolate. Or maybe you asked for natural-looking highlights and got skunk-inspired streaks instead. Trust us, our creative team of L’Oreal Professional hair color educators specialize in hair color correction and our salon is known for being the best hair color correction salons NYC and best highlights correction salon NYC!

Although all colorists ultimately want happy, satisfied clients, there’s always the possibility of human error or a breakdown in communication. But before you resign yourself to wearing a hat for the foreseeable future, consider this: Most color catastrophes are completely fixable!

If your color job left your hair looking more like Carrot Top than Christina Hendricks, your first instinct might be to request a quick fix. But, for the sake of your hair, consult an expert before doing anything. “Because tones, formulas, and techniques range so broadly, only an expert can make a professional assessment about when and how your hair can be processed again,” says Jacob Amin, a master colorist at New York City – based Fine Artistik Salon. “Typically, hair can be processed again immediately, but leave it to the technician to make the call. Hair health comes first.” Also, to minimize the damage, we offer the OLAPLEX hair treatment or the L’Oreal Pro-Fiber treatment that you may receive in the salon and purchase the treatment package for home. We are the best hair color correction salons NYC.

It depends on the amount of possible damage that has occurred. We definitely say to take the hair-coloring process in baby steps. Consult with your stylist and determine what is best for the health of your hair and go from there.

Collaboration Vs. Confrontation – BEST HAIR COLOR CORRECTION SALONS NYC. BEST BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS SALONS NYC.

Don’t give up on your colorist at the first sign of something going wrong, especially if you’ve been to them in the past with positive results. Trust them to fix it if they’ve been your colorist over many visits to the salon, and you’ve built a relationship. You know their skills, and they know your hair and unique preferences, so allow them the opportunity to make the adjustment. If it’s their first time working on your hair, but you’ve had a good rapport and experience overall, let them try again. Trust works both ways, so finding a hair expert who vibes with and communicates with you is essential.

However, if you feel intimidated or uncomfortable voicing your concerns — hit the road. Any hair-color appointment, particularly a corrective one, should feel like a collaboration between you and your colorist. We always want you to feel happy and confident with the outcome. When communication is broken, and your colorist acts defensive or has a diva-like attitude, just cut your losses. Best hair color correction salons NYC.

If they don’t have any work on their profile showing they can achieve what you want, find someone else. It may cost more in the end, but having the right color is priceless.

No matter how your dye job was bungled, most colorists agree you shouldn’t try to fix it at home. Color-removal products are created specifically for professional use. They’re hard to get your hands on for a reason. We choose the best option for color removal based on a few key things: how much color we need to remove (for example, someone going from black to red or blonde versus someone who’s a touch darker than they’d like); what was previously used on hair (such as permanent color versus demi-permanent); and what would be best suited for their specific hair type, including its current condition. The truth is that the color-removal process is highly complex: In the salon environment, there are many variables in lightener formulas, different strength developers, techniques, and so on. These differences are the tricks of the trade, and one size does not fit all.

best balayage highlights salons nyc

Usually, professionals will first try products that remove color without bleach or ammonia. These contain sulfur and shrink the dye molecules trapped in your hair. It allows the color to wash out and is much more gentle than using bleach. It doesn’t have a 100% success rate and can only pull out so much, if it’s permanent or semi-permanent dye. For more serious removal, the pros reach for bleach. Though it’s a harsher process, now that there’s Olaplex, it’s a less damaging process overall. To fix that green-hair-in-a-pool moment, your colorist may use a mineral remover, which pulls out buildup and may slightly tweak the tone. A bad blonde job can be tackled in so many different ways and is quite specific to what actually went wrong. Best hair color correction salons NYC.

A too-brassy hair coloring job is probably the easiest fix, calling for a toner correction at the salon. Unless, you wanted to be brighter and the highlights didn’t lift long enough. Sometimes, the highlights need to be lightened a bit. Brassy highlights can result from the highlights not being processed light enough, particularly on darker bases. If you can’t wait for your next salon appointment, try eliminating brassy tones with a purple or blue-tinted shampoo, which contains correcting and neutralizing pigments.

“Highlights” that look more like skunk stripes require more professional expertise. This issue can sometimes be corrected by simply toning down the highlights so they blend better with the natural hair in between — this technique is often called rooting. Or the opposite may need to happen, and the natural hair will need to be lightened to lessen the contrast. It all depends on the desired result. Sometimes, a few more highlights are needed to fill in spaces. If the highlight is stripe-y and too chunky, then a lowlight may be necessary to break it up.

Whatever you do, though, Jacob Amin says not to fix this at home. “Clients come in all the time having tried this themselves, and it’s a disaster.”

If you’re already regretting your decision to go full-on Morticia Addams black, your colorist may be able to dial it down with a color softener or remover. But you’re in luck: Often, if a color appears too dark at first, it lightens on its own after a few shampoos, even with just your regular shampoo. While there’s no quick fix for going lighter, you can speed up the process by sleeping in deep conditioner to try to fade hair naturally before going to get a color correction.

The good news? It’s all going to be okay. Everything can be fixed within a reasonable time. Hair grows half an inch a month and replenishes itself, so you are never completely screwed. The beauty of hair color is that, as long as the hair is still on the head, it can be fixed. The question is, how long will it take? Typically, color can be tweaked right away by adjusting the tone, adding more highlights, and so on, but a truly botched color job takes time. After the first appointment, it will look a lot better and only improve from there, but it typically takes a few more appointments after the first. In other words: Better days are ahead!

The blonde looks yellow: A common concern for all the blondies out there, hair can quickly become yellow and barbie-like, especially if your using the wrong products. Next time you visit the salon be sure to ask your stylist for a cool-toned blonde. Be very specific about what you don’t want (i.e. no yellow or warm tones). Ask for ashy, cool colors and avoid shades like caramel and honey, as they tend to run a little warmer. Once a week use a toning mask to keep any warmth from returning.

Your hair has turned orange: Brassiness can happen to the best of us, orange tones can be particularly stubborn and difficult to deal with, but it’s not an impossible task. Let your colorist know that you’ve been struggling with the brassier or orange tones in your current hair color. Make it very clear what you want – if you prefer an ashier shade, they need to know this. Sometimes your stylist will need to lighten your hair to a blonder color to lift out the orange tones, but then they’ll drop it back down to the desired color and tone. For example, if your hair is naturally dark, but you want an ashy blonde you will need to lighten the hair more and then tone it darker, adding the ash into it.

The blonde is too ashy: You wanted an ashy blonde but it’s gone wayyy too ashy; think, grey-meets-green. Ask your stylist for golds, coppers and peaches – these are all warmer tones. Take a picture of the shade you want, but if you’re not sure, a good colorist should be able to advise you on which hair colors will suit and which won’t. Sometimes, reversing grey/green ash tones is more complicated than neutralizing brassy tones.

BEST BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS NYC SALON. BEST BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS SALON NYC.

The roots are a different color to the ends: The hair dye hasn’t taken as well to the roots and now they’re a totally different shade to the rest of your hair. A good colorist should be able to match your roots to the rest of your hair. They should spend time sectioning your hair and applying dye to the roots first, then blending down the rest of the lengths – if needed.

Balayage Highlights AKA Hair Painting is a huge trend right now with some of the more artistic stylists. With this technique, the hair is painted freely, by hand and usually with an actual paint brush and palette. Hair should be laid flat and is typically separated by plastic wrap. The lightener or color is usually not placed in any specific pattern but where it should be seen. The hard part about hair painting, is the stylist must have a super trained (or natural) eye for this kind of thing. This technique creates natural-looking and softer tones. Plus it is much faster than foils and there is no possibility of lines of demarcation. Balayage has been around for a while, but this timeless technique is creeping its way back into being one of the most popular hair color requests in salons today.

How long does it take to do balayage? The depth of balayage can vary so much from a few small highlights that will only take a matter of minutes to a full on, triple process look that can take up to 3 hours. Though it can take quite a long time to do a multi-tonal, layered balayage compared to regular color the benefit of the application means you will be able to leave longer between your next color appointment. If you want a few balayage babylights this may take as little as 45 minutes. We are the best balayage highlights NYC salon and our L’Oreal Professionnel team of hair colorists in NYC are known for being the best blonde highlights salons NYC!

What sets it apart from traditional hair coloring? Balayage is quite different to traditional highlights because no foil is used and the color is painted on freehand. The finished result is less uniform than typical highlights. If you’ve ever been worried about having stripey color after a visit to the hairdressers, balayage is a sure way to avoid that harsh contrast between colors – especially if you’re going blonder.

The color created is totally bespoke to you and can even be placed in a way to compliment or distract attention away from certain features on the face.

Babylights are super subtle and delicate highlights created using a technique that mimics the subtle, dimensional hair color seen on children’s hair. Hence “baby” lights. This look is very natural looking and creates the ultimate sun-kissed expression on the hair. This technique is very similar to highlights, with a touch of balayage. The amount of hair in the foil is the main difference. Babylights require much less hair than traditional highlights. The result is subtle but beautiful and amazing for blonde on blonde dimension.

Foilyage is another new trend similar to the above techniques. The process essentially combines the way balayage is painted and the vibrancy that foils achieves with the color. This technique is essentially the upgraded version on balayage and a saving grace for dark hair since it incorporates foil (meaning you get more lift).

Violet toned shampoos and conditioners, help to balance out orange or yellow tones in the hair since they sit opposite of orange on the color wheel. They will cancel out some of the brassy or orange tones that are present. But, a shampoo or a conditioner won’t completely solve the issue. For that, we highly recommend seeing a hair color correction specialist.

Toner (also known as semi-permanent color, glazes and glosses) is one of the best-kept secrets in the fight against brassy hair color. Toners help to counteract unwanted colors. Toning incorporates the basic color principle that “opposite shades cancel each other out.” Toning is usually done in a salon, although there are at home options available if you cannot make it to your favorite beauty parlor! Toner works to basically tone down the current shade of your hair. Remember, in order for toner to work successfully, the base color of your hair has to be correct. Also, if the hair color or highlights are red/orange, the only toner that might help is a darker shade. Unfortunately, ash blonde toner won’t help. It actually might turn the hair green/gray. Best hair color salon NYC Best highlights NYC!

A toner helps to limit brassiness in the hair but it won’t correct the shade of your base. If the base color is too brassy to begin with, toner won’t really do much for you. If you need to lighten your hair first, give us a call or shoot us an email to schedule your consultation. Hair color correction is sensitive!

Keep in mind that using a toner acts as a temporary quick fix. Don’t be too surprised if orange or yellow tones start to creep back up on you in a few weeks as your hair color fades. Remember that clear toners or glosses will not typically soften or correct brassy color but rather just add shine to your hair!

Highlights/Lowlights will help to keep some variation in the hair by darkening some of the pieces that may have become too light or brightly colored for your liking. When your color has taken a turn for the worst, lowlights may just be your saving grace. To reverse the look of orange tones, darker color can be added back into the hair. Darker blonde shades will cool the hair without darkening it too much and the results can be beautiful! Unless you’re already pretty experienced, this brassy hair fix is best done at a professional hair salon that specializes is color correction.

WHY DOES DARK HAIR TURN ORANGE WHEN WE COLOR IT?

If your natural color is dark and you want to lighten it without turning orange, you can! The trick becomes, how to lighten it without getting an unwanted ghastly copper tone. The most likely reason why dark hair turns orange is because the hair is over-sensitized (previously damaged from either chemicals or life) and lightened incorrectly. This is especially the case with highlighting. If the lightening agent (the color or bleach) is not chosen correctly, or not left on long enough the hair is not lightened past the point of removing the yellow or orange pigment, those pigments are exposed and it looks “brassy.” Some hair types, naturally, have a lot of red undertone pigments which must be stripped off in order to achieve a lighter shade. So, imagine on top of those pigments, you’ve dyed your own hair at home with black box dye or dark brown or medium brown or light brown? That causes more red pigment deposit onto your hair. So, if that’s the case, truthfully speaking, you cannot walk into a hair salon and expect to walk out light blonde or ash blonde on that same day or in 1 session. It takes several sessions and months sometimes up to a year to achieve a desired hair color.

Try and stay within 2 shades of your natural hair color. For the most natural looking results, it’s best not to lighten too much too quickly. Especially when going from very dark to very light your chances of going brassy is greater.

Dark hair has a tendency to turn orange because the undertones of dark hair are red and orange. A good colorist will use the right formula for your hair and correct the undertones by balancing them out with cooler shades then your color should not turn orange. At home, it may be a little more difficult to choose the correct tones to help balance your brassiness. If you don’t have a basic knowledge of chemistry or the color wheel stay away from the drug store and instead visit a professional hair salon.

Hair is more than one color, even though it may look like it’s only the one shade. Hidden beneath the color you see in the mirror, there are a variety of warm tones contributing to the appearance of your hair, giving it depth and the darkness it needs to look the way it looks. The cool tones that also contribute to the shade are the reason why your hair looks like a balanced natural shade. These tones balance out the warmth to form the color you actually see when you look in the mirror. We are the best hair color salon NYC best highlights NYC!

If you’re not a natural blonde and have to bleach your hair to become blonde, you’re susceptible to brassy hair because of the way your hair is lightened and toned. Dark hair that is lightened with bleach is progressively lightened, revealing warm tones ranging from deep red all the way down to a pale banana yellow. Once it reaches a yellow color, it can be toned blonde with a dye to balance out that yellow base tone and form a natural blonde color.

As with all hair dyes, blonde shades can and do fade. The main difference here however is that instead of seeing your color get lighter as it would if you dyed it with a darker dye, brassy hair occurs. As your blonde dye fades, the cool tones wash out of your hair, causing more yellow, gold, and copper tones to become visible in your color once this balance is thrown off. Fixing brassy hair requires you to add these cool tones back in.

When you think of getting your hair dyed at the salon, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? A head full of foil, right? Well, there is another popular technique that colorists use to get a more diffused, lived-in highlight. It’s called balayage (that’s pronounced bah-ley-ahge). Balayage is a hand-painted highlight. It’s much more free hand, and you look at the whole picture, which you can’t see as easily when you do a foil. At Fine Artistik Salon, balayage highlights and color correction has been our speciality for over 12 years! We are the best balayage highlights NYC salon.

The final result of this meticulous painting process is part surfer girl, part laid-back model. It has such a natural effect. It really doesn’t look like highlights,” says Jacob Amin. “It has this glow, and you look like you spent time in the sun.” The best part about balayage is that it is super low maintenance. Below you’ll find the most common questions women have about balayage highlights, answered by our hair color specialists:

DOES THE BALAYAGE PROCESS TAKE LONGER THAN FOILS HIGHLIGHTS?
It depends on a lot of factors—like if your hair has been dyed before, or how long your strands are. However, in general balayage does take a bit longer than foil because the stylist goes through piece by piece to customize the color and also because we do not use foils and instead we paint the color, it takes longer to lift your hair color to the desired shade. This highlighting technique is also a bit more expensive. It’s more expensive because it takes more thought and creativity from the stylist. And you also don’t have to do it as often, so you’re paying a little bit more for that convenience.

HOW LONG WILL BALAYAGE LAST BETWEEN HAIR COLOR APPOINTMENTS?
Some clients with balayage can go six months before coming in for a touchup, and others prefer to come in more often. Because the highlights are hand-painted, they look pretty natural as they grow out, whereas foil can leave a stark line of demarcation at the roots. And if you have a double-process color (meaning your whole head of hair is dyed a new color before adding a second layer of highlights), you can get your roots touched up without re-doing the balayage.

DOES BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS WORK FOR CURLY OR READ HAIR?
Balayage can work for many different hair types, from fine to curly. It’s also not just for blonde highlights. For the fall, a lot of people are coming in wanting a bronze or copper-toned balayage. You can even do a rose gold balayage if you want to. Patel hair dye balayage highlights is the latest trend. Colors such as silver grey, metallic grey, rose gold, dusty lavender, purple, blue, white hair color, violet undertone etc…

ARE BALAYAGE AND OMBRE THE SAME THING?
Many of our clients get confused about the difference between ombré and balayage. Balayage goes up higher [on the strand] than an ombré and balayage looks much more natural than an ombré. Bottom line: Many ombré looks change dramatically from dark to light near the ears, but balayage goes up closer to the roots. And both looks are lightest at the very ends because it’s all about achieving a sun-kissed effect. If you’re living in Hawaii or someplace with lots of sun, that is how your hair is going to lighten, and as it grows the ends will be naturally lighter.

WHAT SHOULD I ASK MY HAIRSTYLIST BEFORE I GET BALAYAGE?
Before you book your balayage appointment, make sure to gather inspiration photos, so that your stylist knows exactly what you want your balayage to look like. Also, ask the receptionist about the products the salon uses. There are bleaches made specifically for the balayage technique. These products keep the highlights from smearing during the process to avoid any demarcation lines. Some salons also use Saran wrap to keep the bleach from spreading. And if this isn’t your first time getting color, you’ll definitely want to ask about the Olaplex hair treatment. This professional treatment helps strengthen bleached hair. It’s a three-step regimen used during and between color appointments to keep breakage and damage away.

With that said, many guests come to us to “fix” what either they did at home over the course of many months or years, or what another stylist did based on the guest’s desire at the time. In these situations, we typically find multiple bands of different colors and tones, uneven re-growth, brassy highlights or faded lowlights throughout the hair that need to be corrected or “evened out”. Then, we must explain to our guests that what has been done to the hair over the course of weeks, months or years may take more than one visit to the salon to correct.

For instance, we have many customer’s visit us and they’ve used box hair color for many years to cover their gray and they come to us seeking to go back to their “natural” hair color, which is much lighter than their current box color shade. Because box hair color is progressive, it tends to darken over time, especially the ends, which is what most people realize after coloring their hair at home for years. They use the same color, but somehow it just keeps getting darker! In order to correct and lighten the hair, a stylist may choose to do one of many things including but not limited to partial bleach highlights, all-over bleach or a color remover process prior to formulating professional hair color to more natural shade. Depending upon what process has been done, we may take up to a week or even as long as 1-3 months to see desired results. This is due to the fact that the stylist cannot predict with 100% certainty how the hair will react to bleach or a color remover process and the fact that the first time formulating and applying professional hair color over box hair color may not give a perfectly accurate result. It also depends upon the health, integrity, strength and porosity of the hair. Therefore, the stylist must explain to the guest that again, what has been done to the hair over the course of weeks, months or years may take more than one visit to the salon to correct.

To minimize the damage, we offer the OLAPLEX treatment. We are the best hair color salons NYC and best hair color correction salons NYC.

A “fashion color” that has been applied many months ago. The hot pink that you loved for many months prior has faded off to a nice pastel pink but is now ready to go back to being a caramel blonde and you do not want to cut any hair off. This situation is very difficult and requires a lot of work to reverse direct dye fashion colors. Bleaching the hair does not always work and can cause irreversible damage and breakage, not to mention creating a more difficult canvas for future color deposit. Many times the stylist will scrub the hair with color removers and bleach combination but the color just doesn’t disappear. It is almost the same as trying to remove a wine stain from 4 months ago that set on a white shirt. It’s almost impossible. In this situation, the stylist must do their absolute best to use the tools in their arsenal to protect the integrity and health of the hair while coaxing it back to a more natural shade. Usually, that means counteracting the fashion shade with other hair colors and by using their expansive knowledge of the color wheel and color formulation. Cutting off much of this hair is generally a good idea and speeds up the process, but if that isn’t an option, then the guest is committed to a longer than normal process.

In our experience at Fine Artistik Salon, sometimes we even have to correct our own work when a guest desires a more dramatic color change. The positive side of this, however, is that the stylist and guest can discuss change at each and every appointment and prepare the “canvas” well in advance. We recommend the following for people contemplating a more dramatic color shift:

Ensure your hair is healthy and strong and can withstand any process that requires bleach. Bleach causes damage to the hair, weak strands, breakage and loss of elasticity and porosity. Over-processed hair also damages the cuticle, which causes faster fading of hair color. Again, we offer the OLAPLEX hair treatment to minimize hair damage. Click on the link to read more about OLAPLEX!

Strengthen the hair by using products your stylist recommends: extra conditioning treatments are key, at home or in the salon. Professional salon products are formulated to target problem areas in order to get faster results. Ask your stylist what they recommend for you!

Get your hair cut! Evening out the ends will help the overall outcome of any new color service to make it look its absolute best. Remember, longer hair can have more than 1-3″ of dead ends that will affect the outcome. Guests must be understanding that losing an inch or two or three is necessary in the color corrective process.

Ease into your color change if you’re nervous about a big shift! Have your stylist make subtle changes over a longer period of time.

Have clear expectations that your color change may not come after one appointment.

Best Keratin Hair Treatment Salon NYC. Best Keratin Treatment Salons NYC. Coppola Concept. Brazilian Blowout

Best Keratin Hair Treatment Salon NYC. Peter Coppola Keratin Concept Salon NYC. Brazilian Blowout Hair Treatment Salon NYC.

Keratin doesn’t de-frizz your hair. “Keratin treatment” has become the term of choice for hair-smoothing processes that leave your hair frizz-free for months. But forget about the word keratin. At Fine Artistik Salon, we are known for being the best keratin hair treatment salon NYC and best keratin treatment salons NYC! Just like contouring and balayage highlights, keratin treatments are yet another topic that stays trending in the beauty world, and if one of your BFFs has ever tried it out, chances are, she has yet to shut up about the magic it worked on her hair.

best keratin hair treatment salon nyc

If blowing out your strands feels more like playing tug-of-war, you could benefit from its smoothing results, though the variety of in-salon and at-home versions can make the world of keratin slightly harder to navigate. That’s why we highly recommend getting your keratin hair treatment in a professional hair salon only! First things first, determine if your hair type is right for the service—curly and frizzy textures will see the most benefits, whereas fine, straight strands should avoid it altogether.

First, a quick chemistry lesson: Think of straight hair as a ladder and curly hair as a spiral staircase. The steps on both are the hair’s bonds. If you break those bonds, you can rebuild the spiral staircase as ladder — so curly hair becomes straight. Ammonium thioglycolate and sodium hydroxide permanently break the bonds — that’s how traditional relaxers and “Japanese straightening” treatments transform the texture of the hair. Some “keratin treatments” (and the popular Peter Coppola Concept Treatment and Brazilian Blowout) saturate the hair with a solution before it’s dried and flat ironed. The keratin locks the hair into that straighter position so it stays smooth beyond your next shampoo. Your natural texture then gradually returns over two to five months.

Have you ever had a stylist talk you out of a pixie? It’s not your face shape — it’s your frizz. That’s why many hairstylists now do a smoothing treatment before a major chop. We even seen an uptick in men coming in for the treatment. If you want to cut your hair short, or already have, look for a salon that does incremental pricing for their smoothing treatments. We are the best keratin hair treatment salon NYC.

You’ll need to switch your shampoo afterward — but you don’t need to buy theirs. Many brands that make salon smoothing treatments also sell take-home products that they claim will extend your results. Buy them if you want, but don’t feel pressured. Any sulfate-free shampoo will work,” says Jacob Amin. Also, stay away from one particular styling product: Beach wave sprays are often loaded with sulfates and salts and can cause frizz to reappear prematurely.

At Home Keratin Treatments? Just don’t expect them to last a month. Or even a week (especially if you have tight ringlets). Most at-home hair-smoothing treatments don’t affect any bonds in the hair, so they’re not damaging…or nearly as effective. They usually just coat the hair shaft with a barrier, like silicone, to keep humidity from entering. In the majority of cases, the only damage you’re doing to your hair with these treatments, like Tresemmé 7 Day Keratin Smooth Heat Activated Treatment, comes from hitting it with a flatiron. Results last a week at most — but cost as little as $10. Which is a bargain, considering a typical salon treatment can, and should, cost upward of $200. Any salon treatment that costs less than that is worrying, so do your homework. You’re paying for the technician’s experience, the time spent on your hair, the credibility of the products, and the proper ventilation. This should not be a walk-in situation. If an in-salon deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

best coppola keratin concept salons nyc

Don’t do an in-salon hair-smoothing treatment more than three times a year. Save the treatments for when you need them most — like in the summer!

That being said, what does a keratin treatment actually do? Keratin treatments fill in the porosity of your hair, as overly-porous hair causes tangles, frizz, and breakage. Your hair is made up of keratin, so the treatment is putting the protein back into the hair, which is often lost due to age and chemical services.

Because it is essentially rebuilding the damaged areas, you can expect to see an increase in shine, less frizz, and an easier styling process overall. Make sure you have a consultation with your stylist beforehand to determine the best formula, particularly if you are a blonde, as every keratin treatment isn’t created equally. Some treatments with glycolic acid can shift the tonality of hair color, so a thorough consultation on these points is crucial. If you are a blonde, see if the salon has a treatment for lighter hair colors. This aspect may be lost with the at-home alternatives, which can be considered a one-size-fits-most version to the salon’s bespoke treatment. The at-home services will not give a customized result. The difference between the two comes down to the quality of the keratin, and a professional knowing exactly what type of treatment works best for your hair. Best keratin hair treatment salon NYC.

Immediately following your treatment, make sure to invest in a shampoo—in order for the keratin to live up to its promises, you aren’t allowed to wash your hair, or tie it back in a ponytail holder for at least 48 hours (depending on the keratin brand). You’ll also need to take a closer look at the ingredients in your current shampoo and conditioner lineup. Sulfate-free formulas are the key to longevity. A manufacturer’s shampoo will prolong it due to the fact that research has been done so that the shampoo doesn’t counteract the treatment. But as far as any keratin-infused shampoo, if the product contains sulfates, it has no benefit for your hair. Get a recommendation from your hairstylist, or opt for one of Keratin Complex’s or Brazilian Blowout’s shampoos, as the brand has an in-salon treatment used by most stylists. If you do your homework and use the right after-care products, your treatment should last at least two months, possibly more depending on your hair type, and how often you choose to lather up. Like any relationship, it will require commitment and perhaps a slight amount of Internet stalking on your end. It’s important that you research everything about the treatment you are considering, and understand both the maintenance and post-regimen routine.

Of course, if you prefer to have a consultation, one of the stylists will be happy to analyze your hair and make sure all of your questions are answered. Alternately, we are available to answer questions regarding this treatment over the phone.

Is a Brazilian Keratin suitable for me? Brazilian Keratins are perfect for almost everyone regardless of hair type. It recommended that you not have any perms, relaxers, or straighteners within the 2 weeks prior to your Brazilian Keratin treatment. Other than that, the only exceptions would be for pregnant women, nursing mothers, or persons with very high sensitivity to chemicals (as with other salon services like color or perms).

How long will it take? This depends on certain factors, which include hair length, type, and texture. It also is determined by the brand of treatment you receive. Typically, a Keratin treatment will require about 2 to 3 hours. Our hair professionnel’s are certified and we known for being the best Coppola keratin concept salon NYC.

What aftercare is involved with this process? For Coppola Keratin Complex Treatments, the main aftercare is the fact that you can’t wash or get your hair wet for 3 days after having the treatment applied. We also advise against exercise and other activity that may cause your scalp to sweat. It is further required that you don’t tie your locks back or put anything in them, which includes products. After the 3 day waiting period, the use of support shampoos and conditioners is required; Sodium-Chloride Free for regular hair and Sodium-Chloride / Sulfate Free for color treated hair.

What type of shampoo/conditioner should I use? We highly recommend sticking to the brands shampoos and conditioners. Keratin complex and/or Coppola concept. Their entire line is sodium chloride free and excellent at nourishing and protecting your hair. For better long lasting results to protect your straightener so it lasts as long as it should.

How easy will my hair be to handle after having this process done? After having the process done all you will need to do when you wash your hair is a quick blow dry style; that’s pretty much it! You will spend less time than you normally spend in your quest to achieve straight hair. Once dry, you are ready to face the humidity and, if you do get caught in some rain, you won’t end up with frizz.

Will I lose all my curl? A lot depends on the current condition of your hair. Brazilian Keratins are designed to smooth your hair and remove frizz. It would generally be safe to expect at least a 50% reduction in your curl with a Brazilian Keratin. If you want to keep some curl, make sure to tell your stylist. They will adjust their ironing technique to give the desired result. If you start with a lot of curl and you prefer straight hair, you may still end up with some curl or waves if you just let your hair dry naturally. Either way, you will see a dramatic reduction in flat iron time.

How often does the treatment need to be applied? Brazilian Keratin treatments typically last between 3 to 4 months depending on your hair type and your follow-up care. Over time the effects will slowly diminish and your hair will return to a natural state. The treatment can be re-done as often as you like.

Will this damage my hair? NO! Brazilian Keratin Treatments will IMPROVE the condition of your hair and protect your hair from humidity and pollutants. The only possible damage could be from a stylist who applied too much heat. Our stylists are properly trained and certified to be sure that they stay well within the recommended heat range.

How long does my hair need to be? Your hair should be at least 4-5 inches long before it can be considered for a Brazilian Keratin.

Can I treat my hair the same as before? For most people, it is easier to care for your hair after a Brazilian Keratin treatment. You will spend less time getting ready and will achieve a better, frizz-free result that will last throughout the day. The correct brushes, cleansing and styling products will be recommended. It is important to follow the recommendations made by your stylist to get the most out of the application. This will be explained during your treatment.

Can I swim in a pool and go to the beach? Regularly swimming in salt water or a salt chlorinated pool will reduce the life of your treatment. In moderation, it is fine but we strongly recommend the use of a product to protect your hair and extend the life of your treatment. After your initial 3 day waiting period (Coppola Keratin Complex), you should always use the proper hair care products and methods to keep your hair clean and healthy. Your stylist will discuss this during your treatment.

Can I have my hair colored after a Brazilian Keratin treatment? You can have your color done before your treatment and the Keratin will help seal in your color so it lasts longer! If you prefer to have it done after your treatment, it is recommended that you wait 2 weeks for a color application.

Can I have this service with hair extensions? Yes, human hair extensions respond the same as regular hair. Many of our stylists have extensive experience with extensions and some are even educators for some of the extension companies. If you are getting extensions at the same time, they can often be treated with a Brazilian Keratin before they are attached. This will save you time and will often provide a better overall result.

Balayage is the hair dye trend that changed everything. From Alexa Chung to Rihanna, anyone who was asking for Balayage to achieve that dreamy ‘just been kissed by the sun in the Maldives’ caramel hair. But could we explain what it was? Probably not… Until now. Find out exactly what Balayage is and what all the hype’s about… Fine Artistik Salon is known for being the best highlights salons NYC, best highlights salon NYC, best blonde highlights salon NYC and best balayage highlights salons NYC 2017!

What Is Balayage? Balayage is a French word meaning ‘to sweep’ or ‘to paint’. It allows for a sun-kissed natural-looking hair color, similar to what nature gives us as children.

How Can You Tell If Your Balayage Has Been Done Properly? The Balayage pieces should be very close and soft at the root leading to a thicker highlight at the ends of the hair. Balayage should be applied on the surface of the section and not saturated through the section until the very tips, otherwise you would have a streak of color that isn’t vey soft at all.

What’s The Difference Between Balayage And Ombré? Balayage is a French word that means to sweep or paint; it’s a highlighting technique. Ombré means to shadow, and it’s a seamless graduation from darker to lighter. People do get confused by the two but you can also combine them in a merged technique which can be very pretty.

Sombré is a much softer version of ombré and is still popular, especially with the charcoal grey trend. We are the best highlights salons NYC & best highlights salon NYC 2017!

What’s The Difference Between Balayage And Highlights? Balayage has softer, less noticeable regrowth lines than traditional highlights – the principal idea being less is more when creating soft, natural looks. There’s no stripy look like you can get with foil highlights, Balayage emulates the parts of your hair that would naturally lighten in the sun.

Also, Balayage is a freehand technique as no foil or meche are used to create the highlights. At Fine Artistik Salon, our creative team of hair colorists are L’Oreal Professionnel educators for blonde highlights and we are the best blonde highlights salon NYC.

Why Is Balayage Better? Look at most A-list celebs and you rarely see a classic foil highlight, you see Balayage and merged techniques like ombre and Balayage, or Babylights and balayage. Remember, balayage highlights is not for everyone and every hair texture or hair length! If you are a foils highlights, stick to foils.

These techniques work with the individual’s haircut and natural hair growth patterns as well as the variance of tones in the hair, for a totally bespoke finish. Because it’s hand-painted, your colorist can choose the placements to best complement your haircut, skin and features so it looks really natural rather than actually colored.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE GETTING BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS?

1. Talk About It: We really passionately believe that consultation is an essential part of the color process – you should have a consultation with your colorist at least 48 hours before your appointment so that they can talk you through the options and give you an allergy test.

2. Get Your Inspo Sorted: Take images in that you love to demonstrate what you’re seeing in your head when you ask for balayage – either from a magazine or on your phone. Your colorist will be able to tell you if it’ll suit your skin tone – there are so many great shades out there, some warm, some cool, but you need to get it right.

3. Find The Right Salon For You: Do your research before heading to the salon. Check out the Instagram page of your hair salon, every color should look different. If the application is the same for each client then it’s not unique to them – each client should have a bespoke application that works with their cut.

Does Balayage Work On Natural Textured Hair? Balayage works on all textures, and in some ways curly hair is easier because you can pick out each curl you want to apply color to. The pre-lightener (bleach) or color choice is dependent on the finished look you want to achieve, not the texture.

Are There Any Hair Colors That Don’t Work With Balayage? Balayage is a highlighting technique and can be used on any hair color.

Can You Get Balayage If You Have Short Hair? Absolutely – with short hair it’s just the same principles, application is dictated by the haircut and should always flow naturally.

What’s This Year’s Balayage Update? This year, we devised a menu of color called ‘Balayage-to-go’, which reflects our modern lifestyles and the need to get things done quickly. The application time ranges from just 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

The New Yorker – Done in just 15 mins at the backwash, these are super quick highlights that fit easily into your lunch hour. They touch the root and look effortless for the perfect pick-me-up. As seen on Poppy Delevingne.

The Rio – Think contouring for the hair, ask for pieces to frame the face, around the parting and touching the root, this takes just 30 mins. As seen on Ana Beatriz Barros.

The Londoner – Nothing touches the root – it’s a creative Balayage for a cool, more lived-in look and takes 30 mins. As seen on Vanessa Kirby.

The LA – For blondes who want to be blonder, we add super blonde pieces in a combination of root touch around the face, and more lived in everywhere else. We use a ‘base break’ where we lift the natural base to soften the natural color and make it appear much blonder. This takes 45 mins. As seen on Michelle Williams.

The California – It’s the perfect summer blonde – a much heavier incarnation of classic Balayage with a slightly lived-in root and much more of the hair is colored.

It can be tailored to any skin tone – anywhere from pale icier blondes, to golden shades can be used. It’s a gorgeous low-maintenance color to take you through the entire summer as it’ll start out heavy and then grow out into a lived-in finish so the upkeep is completely dependent on the wearer.

Highlights (in hair) are defined as lightened pieces of hair that are colored lighter than your natural or base color. Lowlights are virtually the same thing, only darker pieces of hair are added to your hair color. At Fine Artistik Salon, our L’Oreal Professionnel team are balayage highlights educators and are recognized world wide. We specialize in all highlighting techniques and all shades & tones. The techniques for applying highlights and lowlights are virtually the same. We are the best balayage highlights NYC salon. Highlights and/or lowlights create definition in your hair color, brighten up dull or mousey hair color, or can completely transform your color, depending on the technique you request. Often your hairstylist will choose the technique that they’re most comfortable with or that they think will work best with your hair type, however knowing what your options are can give you a leg up on your color consultation.

The following describe the difference between foil highlights and balayage highlights techniques.

Highlights, lowlights, balayage, ombré, sombré—the variations on multidimensional hair color are endless. With so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to tell which looks are truly flattering and which are passing trends. L’Oréal Professionnel Artist Jacob Amin talks about what factors he takes into consideration when consulting with clients about the best highlights and hair color for them.

If You Want Something Low-Maintenance. The first thing to take into consideration, is how regularly you’ll return to the salon to maintain your color. If you’re only going to be in the salon twice a year, then we’re going to be working off of the existing base or using a demi-permanent colors to make the color richer without lifting or lightening it, something that’ll just gently fade away. All of the highlighting will be farther back from her hairline so that you don’t see any of the new growth coming in, so in theory, you could come back in a month if you wanted to, or you could never get it done again and it will grow out beautifully and naturally with no line of demarcation.

Foil highlights or lowlights are likely the most popular hair highlighting method used today. Pieces of foil are used to separate the hair that will be colored or lightened from the hair that will not be altered. Foil is the material of choice simply because it’s cheap and very easy to work with and manipulate. Typically a hair lightening bleach is used to lighten the hair, and hair color (hair dye) is used to darken the hair, although hair color can also be used to lighten natural uncolored hair.

Foiled highlights are a popular choice because customizing options for this service is limitless. A very wide variety of techniques have been developed over the years using unique sectioning and placement of the foils. Hair can be weaved and sliced using the foil to create the exact chunks, streaks, or subtle pieces that you want. Using this technique, highlights and lowlights can be made to look more natural or very bold and streaky. We are the best balayage highlights NYC salon 2017!

Another reason this highlighting service is preferred is because highlights can be placed very close to the scalp using foil without getting lightener directly on the scalp, reducing irritation to the scalp and face. It can be a pricey service and can take two to four hours to complete a full foil highlight, depending on the thickness of your hair and the end result desired.

Best Balayage Highlights NYC Salon & Best Balayage Highlights Salon NYC 2017!

Balayage highlights and lowlights are quickly taking over highlighting services in salons everywhere, even though the technique has been around since the 1980’s. Balayage highlights are free-hand painted or swept onto the hair at the colorist’s discretion. The options for balayage highlights are also vast and a variety of balayage techniques have become popular in recent years. There’s not really a right or wrong way to balayage, giving your colorist a lot of creative freedom.

Balayage highlights and lowlights typically result in a more natural, sun-kissed look than foil highlights and are a popular option for ombre hair color graduation. Because the results are more subtle than foil highlights, balayage highlights often grow out in a more seamless manner without an obvious line of demarcation that you get when foiled highlights and lowlights grow out. Our hair colorists are master’s in balayage highlights and we are known for being the best balayage highlights NYC salon.

The skill set of your stylist is key when requesting a balayage highlighting service. It’s absolutely as artistic as it is a skill set, and an unskilled colorist could quite easily destroy your hair color with misplaced balayage highlighting.

Cap highlights are the dinosaur of hair highlighting techniques and are not used often in modern-day salon. Cap highlighting methods utilize a highlighting cap that is placed on the head. Small pieces of hair are then pulled through the cap using a small highlighting hook. Only the hair that is pulled through the cap is exposed to the hair lightener or bleach. Cap highlights have also been referred to as “frosted hair”.

While cap highlights can look very nice and are much less expensive and time consuming than foil or balayage highlights, the options are limited for customizing your highlight service and getting close to the scalp can also be an issue with the cap. Long and curly hair can be hard to pull through a cap, and your color options are limited to one color only with cap highlights. You kind of “get-what-you-get” when you go the cap route.

Stick to foils highlights and/or balayage highlights! 🙂

Best Hair Color Salons NYC. Best Highlights Color Salons NYC! Confused About Hair Color Or Not Sure Which Color Suits You?

Have you ever tried out a hair color and found that it completely didn’t suit you after the stylist was done? The reason may lie in your skin. Beyond the basic choices of brown, blonde, red, or black, the infinite number of sub-colors and shades available can make picking a hair color from those tiny sample books next to impossible. If you like crazy or nontraditional colors, the choice becomes even harder. Just like choosing the right clothing colors, your hair color can drastically affect your looks and make your skin tone look vibrant or dull. We are the Best Hair Color Salons NYC! Keep reading to learn how to assess your skin tone and find out exactly which hair colors will look best on you.

Before you test your skin’s undertones, make sure you’re using natural light, as artificial light can change how your skin looks depending on the slight color shift caused by different types of light bulbs. This guide gives several great options to determine your skin’s true undertone. For a quick check, we recommend flipping your palm face up and taking a look at the veins in your hand and wrist. If your veins have a blue or purple hue, then you have cool undertones. If the veins have a greenish cast, you have warm undertones. If you can’t really say that they favor one shade over the other, then you likely have neutral undertones. If you’ve got neutral undertones, congratulations — any of the colors we describe below should look great on you. If you’re cool or warm, keep reading to find out which shades work best for you, and why.

Ash blonde, including shades like platinum, ice, silver, and champagne, look great on those who have cool skin with reddish undertones. The slightly blue cast in these blonde shades will counteract ruddiness in the skin. Celebrities who have rocked ash blonde correctly with their skin tone include Gwen Stefani and Taylor Swift. If you decide to go with one of these shades, make sure you use a purple shampoo and conditioner to keep the color from yellowing. Our creative team at Fine Artistik Salon are known for being the best! We are proud to have earn such a reputation “best hair color salons NYC”.

If you have fair, cool skin with blue undertones, go slightly warmer with your blonde by choosing gold, caramel, amber, honey, or butterscotch for your shade. A honey or caramel blonde is also a good choice for those with olive skin and neutral undertones or deep skin, as going too light or ashy with your blonde can wash out your face. If you have very warm undertones, you want to avoid warm blonde, as too much yellow can make you look sallow. Use toner frequently to avoid your color going brassy.

Cool brown shades like chestnut, mocha, dark chocolate, and dark auburn go great with those who have skin with warm undertones. From fair to deep skin, if you’ve got yellow undertones, consider using a cool brown hair color to brighten up your complexion.

Pick a warm brown shade like golden brown, honey, amber, mahogany, or cinnamon if you have medium skin with warm undertones. When Emilia Clarke isn’t wearing her platinum wig as the Mother of Dragons on Game of Thrones, her favorite hair color is warm brown.

best hair color salons upper east side nyc

Cool reds including auburn, burgundy, and true red will look great on those with fair cool skin with reddish undertones. The bluish red cast of your hair will make your skin pop instead of looking flushed or ruddy. If you have deep skin, opt for a cool auburn over warm red, because warmer red tones will make your skin look greenish or sickly.

If you have neutral skin undertones or bluish undertones in fair skin, then warm red is for you. Pick your favorite from strawberry blonde, amber, copper, or rust shades. Make sure to get shampoo for color-treated hair and avoid washing frequently to keep your color strong as long as possible between touch-ups.

Cool black hair colors like espresso, licorice, blue-black or true black will look great on those with warm undertones. If you’re fair or olive skinned, the contrast will take your yellowish undertones and give you an almost porcelain-doll look to your skin. If you have deep skin, you can wear cool black shades regardless of your undertone.

If you crave warm black shades like dark mocha, cocoa, or brown-black, then make sure you have cool undertones to your fair or medium skin. If you have deep skin, then you can also use a mocha or cocoa shade to warm things up, no matter what undertone you have.

Do you want to go crazy with your next hair color? While the sky is pretty much the limit and any color of the rainbow can look great if done correctly, there are a few pointers you should keep in mind. Warmer colors like pinks, oranges, and yellows will look best with cool-toned skin. Cool colors like blue and purple will be particularly flattering if you have warm yellow undertones in your skin. If you have deep skin, opt for darker, more saturated colors over pastels. And above all, remember that nontraditional colors will fade quickly because of the lifting process used before color is applied. Make sure you use specialized products to extend the life of your crazy shade.
