When you go through the coloring process, some of the bonds that are responsible for the strength of the hair are broken and once they’re broken, the hair loses strength and is more susceptible to breakage.

The key ingredient in Smartbond is maleic acid, L’Oréal’s Senior Scientific Advisor, Atoshi George explains. “It acts like a mopper-up of bleaching agents and helps some of the weaker bonds to reform.” Smartbond also contains a patented blend of ceramides and polymers, which have to be fine-tuned to give optimum results: “Even one percent difference in the balance of polymers and ceramides can throw the whole formula off,” Atoshi warns. “It’s a very fine line between creating something that will nourish the hair and something that’ll make it look greasy.”
