Best Balayage Highlights NYC & Best Hair Color Salon NYC! So, What Exactly Is Balayage And Its Hype?

Make an appointment with your stylist now! Balayage has been around for a while, but this timeless technique is creeping its way back into being one of the most popular hair color requests in salons today and it is NOT going away! Fine Artistik Salon, L’Oreal Professionnel hair colorists are here to share some professional insight on the booming hair trend, balayage. We are Voted Best Balayage Highlights NYC & Best Hair Color Salon NYC!

So, what is balayage? Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint. It allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair color – similar to what nature gives us as children – with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. The principal idea being less is more when creating soft, natural looks.

How is balayage applied, what’s the process? Balayage is applied on the surface and not saturated through the section until the very tips, otherwise you would have a streak of color that isn’t vey soft at all. It can also be called a freehand technique because no foils are used to create the highlights. If your current hair color is a Brunette or has any red undertone pigments, we will most likely have to either double process your hair or balayage your hair 2-4 times to achieve a lighter color without red tones or an ash tone (this process isn’t done in 2-4 hours, some hair colors require color correction and 2-4 visits to the salon). Our L’Oreal Professionnel team of hair color educators are known for being the best. We are the best balayage highlights NYC salon!

What sets it apart from traditional hair coloring? It’s totally bespoke to you! A good balayage expert will be able to place the color to suit your skin tone, so it’ll look amazing and really light up your features.

What’s making it so popular recently? It’s a skilled technique that hasn’t been widely taught in the UK until recently. Now it’s becoming better known because all the models and A-listers are wearing it. Clients are seeing it on the catwalks and red carpets and want to get that finish rather than the uniform highlights that foils give.

best balayage highlights manhattan nyc salons

Does it require a lot of maintenance? Very little. It grows out beautifully and more naturally so you don’t get an obvious regrowth line and and can wear it for longer between appointments. All you really need to do is protect it as you would any other color: use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner, regular treatments and heat protection when styling.

Is it suitable for all hair types/lengths? It works on both light and dark hair, so anyone really. Both Rihanna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are great examples of balayage poster girls.

“Bronde” is currently a trending color & technique. Popular amongst celebs such as Jessica Alba and Olivia Palermo. It’s the perfect combination of brown and blonde tones. “Bronde” is perfect for darker haired clients who want to try out a lighter color, it can be warm neutral or cool. The choice is really between you and your colorist. Balayage pretty much works for all lengths except very short cropped hair.

What makes it timeless? It’s low maintenance, looks more bespoke, more natural, and is a modern technique that’s much more flattering. Healthy hair is attractive hair and that’ll never go out of fashion. As opposed to standard highlighting methods that use foil or a cap, balayage is strictly freehand where the color is painted on. You can amplify the hue to vary from a soft wash to bright and bold depending on your personal preference. Outside of very short cropped hair, it can work on a variety of hair lengths, textures and colors, making it truly universal and flattering for all women. Most are drawn towards it because the maintenance level is relatively low; many are able to go four months between hair coloring appointments.

Our hair colorists are L’Oreal Professionnel educators and are recognized world wide. One of our unique specialty is corrective hair color. Were you going for a look at it turned out the complete opposite or even worse, did it damage your hair?! No worries! Our L’Oreal Professionnel team can help you achieve your desired hair color and maintain the integrity of your hair!

Hair color is one of the best ways to reinvent your look every time you visit the salon. Trust our professional hair color specialists to help you evolve your hair style to complement your skin tone, your lifestyle, your fashion and your personality. From the trendy balayage, to subtle highlights all the way to high impact color transitions, our team knows how to make people stop and ask about your hair.

Have you ever been told that you will need a color correction in order to achieve the color you want? You were probably left wondering, “What is a color correction, what does it entail, and do I even want one?”

So, not to launch into cosmetology school 101, we will try to break this down as simple as possible. Keeping in mind that every single color situation is different and that every color correction is extremely complex, there are two general types of color corrections (this is making it VERY general as there are limitless possibilities when it comes to color and correcting it). Both would be considered color corrections if you are changing previously artificially colored hair. However, virgin hair can also require color corrections as well. The first type of color correction is making dark color much lighter. The other makes light color much darker. Both may entail multiple color services, sometimes done all in one day and sometimes done over a period of weeks or months. Typically a color correction service can be very costly, time consuming, and sometimes can even be damaging to the hair. If you have colored your hair dark and now want to be a lot lighter all over, it is not as easy as it sounds. Trust us, we wish it was! Your hair might need to be “color cleansed” one or more times, then colored again to achieve a nice tone. If you have very light hair and want to go much darker, it may need to be colored two or more times in order for the color to stay. Your stylist will know which tones to put into the hair to help the color to last longer, be a pretty tone, and not fade right away. Best hair color correction salon NYC ombre highlights color balayage.

If you are looking for a big change in your hair color here is what we recommend: Call a hair salon and ask if they do complimentary hair color consultations. Most do. Let them know over the phone whether you have colored hair and that you are looking for a big change (whether you are wanting to go lighter or darker) and want to talk to your stylist about what options they recommend. This will allow the salon to book the correct amount of time for your consultation.

Bring to your consultation: Pictures of what you want to do to your hair and an honest list of your color history. Oh, and it always helps to be realistic! Anything that you have put on your hair, whether it is sun in, a shine treatment, a box color from the store, smoothing/straightening/perming/Brazillian Smoothers, etc. It is all part of your color history and your stylist needs to know! To minimize the damage we offer the OLAPLEX Treatment & SMARTBOND by L’Oreal Professionnel. Fine Artistik Salon is known for being the best hair color correction salon NYC ombre highlights color balayage!

After your consultation you should have a good idea of how you would like to proceed and the salon can book your future appointment accordingly. Color can be overwhelming but with the right team of hair professionals by your side you can achieve amazing results anytime you want to change your look!

Hair Color Correction NYC Salon! What Is Hair Color Correction And How Is The Process? Voted Best Salon For Hair Coloring In NYC!

Stylists who work in a professional salon have an arsenal of options when it comes to formulating the perfect hair color for each guest. We carry multiple types of color shades, bleach, toning and corrective tools to ensure our results meet each guest’s needs, while ensuring the health and integrity of the hair. After all, Vidal Sassoon said it best: If you don’t look good, we don’t look good! We are the best hair color correction NYC salon!

hair color correction nyc salon

With that said, many guests come to us to “fix” what either they did at home over the course of many months or years, or what another stylist did based on the guest’s desire at the time. In these situations, we typically find multiple bands of different colors and tones, uneven re-growth, brassy highlights or faded lowlights throughout the hair that need to be corrected or “evened out”. Then, we must explain to our guests that what has been done to the hair over the course of weeks, months or years may take more than one visit to the salon to correct.

COLOR CORRECTION – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: We at Fine Artistik Salon believe that hair color correction is a very important topic to discuss. Many believe that we as hair stylists, are magicians, as much as we would love to believe that with you, in reality we are more like chemists. And with that being said, some things are just not possible. Going from black to blonde in one day, NOT POSSIBLE!

If we can learn anything from dark colors, it is that going blonde takes time, patience and a extremely talented & knowledgeable stylist. Removing a darker color from your hair is a strenuous process on your hair, lightener can be damaging if done incorrectly, too often or applied too strong or long at one time. Same goes for any redish tones & hues in your current color or it’s undertone pigments.

So when a colorist says something is possible today or tries to inform you of the reality of your hair situation, make sure to listen because the best hair colorist will care more about the integrity of your hair in the end than a quick buck.

And speaking of bucks… hair color correction is expensive! It is expensive for us, which in terms means it is expensive for you . Most places will charge an hourly price for color corrections because it is such a lengthy process and unless you have seen the stylists for years, they won’t know how your hair reacts to the chemicals we may be using. To minimize the damage in the hair we offer the OLAPLEX Treatment & SMARTBOND Treatment by L’Oreal Professionnel. Both are excellent treatments! Our L’Oreal Professionnel colorists are trained to be the best at hair color and we are known for being the best hair color correction NYC salon.

Most people have box color in their hair or just had a bad color experience that leads to splotches and spotty color that takes us hours to balance out and blend away. The before and afters you see all over the internet takes time! Most celebrity stylists book out half or full days for their color clients and charge thousands of dollars, that is just the reality of the situation. Sometimes your dream hair will take time to achieve, like most things. The point of this is it’s important to listen to your stylist and believe them when they are telling you that big changes take many services, and you do have to pay for each step. It isn’t a one time pay for unlimited treatments. Like we’ve said previously, some colorists charge per hour and some charge per service.

Ensure your hair is healthy and strong and can withstand any process that requires bleach. Bleach causes damage to the hair, weak strands, breakage and loss of elasticity and porosity. Over-processed hair also damages the cuticle, which causes faster fading of hair color. Strengthen the hair by using products your stylist recommends: extra conditioning treatments are key, at home or in the salon. Professional salon products are formulated to target problem areas in order to get faster results. Ask your stylist what s/he recommends for you! Get your hair cut! Evening out the ends will help the overall outcome of any new color service to make it look its absolute best. Remember, longer hair can have more than 1-3″ of dead ends that will affect the outcome. Guests must be understanding that losing an inch or two or three is necessary in the color corrective process. Ease into your color change if you’re nervous about a big shift! Have your stylist make subtle changes over a longer period of time. Have clear expectations that your color change may not come after one appointment.

Ask lots of questions and make sure your stylist gives you a few different options to choose from. Some options might get you very close to your results in one day and other options might take more time but over the long run be less damaging. They may also be able to give you options that will get you close to what you are looking for through highlights or lowlights that won’t require much correcting and will be less costly and less time consuming. Best Balayage Highlights Hair Color Salons NYC. Balayage Highlights vs. Standard Traditional Highlights!

Balayage Hair Color Ideas with Blonde, Brown and Caramel Highlights. Balayage hair color is a French technique that is the latest dye trend to gain international popularity. The goal is to create soft, natural-looking highlights that look more modern than traditional coloring methods. We are the best balayage highlights hair color salons NYC!

Balayage Definition: What is Balayage and Why Do We Love It?

As opposed to standard highlighting methods that use foil or a cap, balayage is strictly freehand where the color is painted on. You can amplify the hue to vary from a soft wash to bright and bold depending on your personal preference. Outside of very short cropped hair, it can work on a variety of hair lengths, textures and colors, making it truly universal and flattering for all women. Most are drawn towards it because the maintenance level is relatively low; many are able to go four months between color treatments.

Balayage hair color options within brown palette are endless. You can go into reddish (caramel and auburn) tones of brown or try golden shades varying from browns to blondes. In case you would like a more neutral solution, it looks like this: dark brown for the under layer, medium browns washed to the lightest ash hues towards the ends and very light thin ribbons of brown blonde throughout the length here and there. Fine Artistik Salon is Voted Best Balayage Highlights Hair Color Salons NYC!

If you want to wear your hair down, a medium-length layered haircut is the best choice. If it’s bold and choppy, support its spirit with a dramatic balayage job. Graze the ends of the layers with a shade much lighter than your base color. Light caramel brown on black is a pretty good idea. Reddish tones of brown are also a very popular solution in balayage. You may start with chocolate brown or dark burgundy as the darkest base color and then pair it with chunky caramel highlights which of course need a sprinkling of blonde to set off the used colors.

Balayage vs. Ombre – which is the best for you? Actually, you don`t have to choose just one of them. This look blends two hair coloring techniques – ombre and balayage to achieve an effect of gorgeous dimensional waves effortlessly cascading down through their natural curves and bends.

best balayage highlights hair color salons nyc upper east side nyc

Most examples of balayage on the Internet feature long hair. But shoulder-length locks also look very beautiful with ombre and with balayage. Brunettes who want to lighten up their hair significantly may go this cute idea with a light brown tone around the face, dark blonde at the ends and a sprinkling of the lightest blonde throughout the length. It’s not the common streaking. The major benefit of this dye technique is creating dimension in the hair. If you enjoy being a brunette, opt for medium-toned brown balayage hair, remaining on your natural dark brown base. This color will look beautiful on medium length layered haircuts for wavy hair.

A modern textured bob worn effortlessly in loose tousled waves always wins from subtle touches of color called to enhance the texture and dimension of your medium length hair when you wear it undone. Sometimes you don’t want additional colors to distract from the beauty of your healthy flowing locks. In this case subtle balayage highlights, a little bit more intense for the face-framing strands, are exactly what is needed. An exquisite compliment, but not an overshadowing attraction.

When you like the idea of lighter ends, but want to wrap it into the most popular today coloring approach, go for balayage ombre. In this particular look the beach waves seem to melt towards the ends – the most relaxed look ever! Dark brown hair and balayage highlights complement each other beautifully, as evidenced by this gorgeous hair color choice. With the chocolate brown base diluted with caramel highlights, this is absolutely a fuss-free and flattering look. The undone waves placed throughout also keep this look modern and fresh.

Best Salon For Highlights In NYC! Highlights Or Lowlights? Balayage?

Best Salon For Highlights in NYC. Best Highlights Salons NYC. Are You Asking For The Right Kind Of Highlights?

In our many years as hair colorist, it surprises us to learn that a lot of people don’t really know the difference between a highlight and a lowlight, let alone the different techniques for achieving the former, arguably more popular, look. Many of my clients know the terms for the processes — namely, foils and balayage — but don’t often understand what’s involved in each one. Before you go to the salon seeking high or lowlights, arm yourself with some of the basics — and a photo!  We are the best salon for highlights in NYC and our reputation is known for being the best highlights salons NYC!

As hairstylists up-to-date on the latest fashion trends, we know the difference between a head full of foils, balayage, and ombre. But, as style seeking clients, do you know which is what? We are here to share with you the difference between these styles to help suit your needs, desires and keep you on trend. But, most of all help you know what to ask for.

FULL-HEAD / HALF-HEAD HIGHLIGHTS: Traditionally, full or partial highlights and lowlights isolate selected strands of hair and treat them with a color, lightener, or toner within foils. If applied evenly throughout the entire head, using weaving and slicing techniques, foils create a natural blend that mimics the way hair changes color over time in the sun. Thus, adding a sense of dimension, texture, and complimentary hues to the existing hair. Foils are the most traditional way of restoring radiance to dull hair or infusing a few different shades to the hair, but do not have as a dramatic result as block coloring.

“Highlights” is a general term that refers to strands of hair that are lighter than the base color they’re being laid upon. It’s commonly believed that a highlight is blonde, but actually a highlight only refers to a color that’s not as dark as the base strands. Highlights aren’t a one-size-fits-all, and neither is the way they are administered. Moreover, the type of highlight depends on a number of things: the look you want, the kind of hair you have, how blonde you wish to go. A rundown of the three main types of highlighting techniques, plus an explanation of lowlights, may help you decide what to ask for at your next color appointment.

WHAT ARE LOWLIGHTS: Unlike highlights, which are lighter than the base strands, lowlights are darker strands of color that are woven into the hair. This process typically produces depth and adds contrast when hair becomes overly light and one-dimensionally colored from being highlighted repeatedly. General oxidation and/or fading can occur from regular highlighting, which is another reason someone might opt to even things out with lowlights. A great technique to keep hair from becoming washed-out and monochromatic, lowlights should also be monitored, since, over time, your ends may become dark and muddy from over-processing. Greater than the decision you make on your hair style and color, however, is choosing your stylist.

LOOKING INTO BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS? Balayage involves a stylist hand painting highlights so they look even more natural, with depth and dimension that resemble the effects of the sun. Balayage means ‘sweeping’ in French, and is a reference to the sweeping motions of the painting process. When painting, stylists start at the middle of the strand and sweep out toward the root or tip. As a result, there is no severe line of color at the root and the grow-out is more natural looking, which translates into longer-lasting results. Dark pieces are left throughout the bottom to create dimension and keep a more natural look.

We prefer the balayage look when we want something more dramatic. We also recommend it for clients looking for a casual, beachy look. Lighter tips and an almost ombré appearance help to define this look. But, balayage, which requires higher volumes of peroxide, may not be the right choice for everyone. To minimize the damage we offer the OLAPLEX TreatmentL’Oreal Professionnel SMARTBOND. Either way, always talk to your stylist before diving into any new process.

Now, that you have a better understanding about these different looks, are you ready for a change? The hardest part about finding someone to achieve these looks is making sure your stylist knows the proper techniques to keep your hair beautiful and healthy. As masters of our craft, we have been receiving so much buzz for our work! So be sure to make an appointment today and stay on trend!

WHAT IS A HAIR COLOR CORRECTION? A “color correction” is meant to fix a color service that had undesirable results. We are the best hair color correction salons NYC! Most people can understand that a color correction is needed for brassy, orange highlights, or at-home color that came out differently than desired (picture green or jet black hair instead of medium brown). Something that may seem like an easy fix or regular color service, though, isn’t always so cut-and-dry.

best hair color correction salons nyc

Some color corrections can be simple, like doing a toner to cut out gold, but others can be a triple-process to lift dark color out. The latter is where time and cost can drastically increase. ESPECIALLY if you’ve used a darker box dye that contains double and triple layers of red undertone pigments.

Could the dark brown color you’ve been getting professionally colored for 6 years need to be “corrected” to get cool blonde highlights? Absolutely! Even though you’ve been getting desired results from your stylist for a long time, you need to remember that changing things up may be more difficult than you think.

In the salon environment, stylists/colorists see a color correction as when a customer wants to take previously colored hair at least 2 levels lighter or take previously colored or virgin hair at least 2 levels darker.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A COLOR CORRECTION? When hair gets lightened, color is actually being taken out, not put in. Unfortunately, other things come out along with the color, such as protein, leaving the hair damaged. If it needs to be lightened again and again, that’s more structural elements that are being removed, too. Therefore, to minimize the damage in the hair we offer the OLAPLEX treatment & Smartbond by L’Oreal Professionnel.

Best Hair Color Correction Salons NYC. Best Highlights Color Correction Salon NYC!

Many times, overzealous stylists think they can do a color correction in one sitting and end up damaging the hair structurally so much that the only fix is a substantial haircut. One way to protect your hair from a ton of damage is to spread out the service over a couple weeks sometimes even months. While you won’t leave the salon with the desired result in one day, you will leave with your hair still on your head.

Our NYC hair salon specializes in many different types of hair coloring and corrective color when Googling for “Best Hair Color Disaster Correction Salons NYC”, “Best Highlights Salons NYC” & “Best Balayage Highlights Salons NYC”. Our L’Oreal Professionnel colorists are knowledgeable and our reputation as revealed from our customers reviews on Google is what differs us from most hair salons in NYC.

If a color turned out too light or you want to go a lot darker, the hair will need to be “filled.” “Filling” means depositing pigment back into the hair. This isn’t as simple as picking a color and putting it on; that’s how you end up with muddy or green colors. Once the hair is filled, it will need to be colored at least once more to get a desired shade. Best Color Correction Salons NYC.

Because a color correction can be more involved, the cost will most times be substantially higher. Some stylists charge $100-$200 per hour for a service that could take 4-6 hours to complete. That cost reflects the amount of color used and the amount of time your stylist needs to work on your hair. At Fine Artistik Salon, we charge per service and not per hour.

best hair color disaster correction salons nyc best color correction salons nyc

WHY DO YOU NEED TO WARN YOUR STYLST ABOUT A POTENTIAL COLOR CORRECTION? While most color corrections aren’t that drastic, your stylist does need to know what to expect when you sit in their chair. If you scheduled a one-color process and it needs to be a four-process correction, the 2-hour appointment just doubled in length. Not only that, but the next two hours of the stylists day just had to be rescheduled on very short notice. Best Hair Color Correction Salons NYC.

A good idea for anyone contemplating a drastic change (see: what a stylist sees as a correction), or anyone who had an unfortunate experience with color, is to contact their stylist before they schedule an appointment. The colorist may want to see a picture of what you have color-wise, and what you want. We always HIGHLY recommend scheduling a in-salon consultation prior to getting you hair color corrected.

“Highlights” is a general term that refers to strands of hair that are lighter than the base color they’re being laid upon. It’s commonly believed that a highlight is blonde, but actually a highlight only refers to a color that’s not as dark as the base strands. The size of the highlights, the level of lightness, the tone, and the placement are all left up to the colorist — after you’ve communicated the look you’re going for, of course. Highlights aren’t a one-size-fits-all, and neither is the way they are administered. Moreover, the type of highlight depends on a number of things: the look you want, the kind of hair you have, how light you wish to go. A rundown of the three main types of highlighting techniques, plus an explanation of lowlights, may help you decide what to ask for at your next color appointment. Best Hair Coloring Salons NYC.

People with thick, heavy hair, who like the look of chunkier highlights with more contrast (a stripier, less all-over blonde), should look into balayage. A French word meaning “to sweep”, balayage actually refers to the sweeping motion produced by the brush when the colorist paints swatches of hair.

“Balayage highlights” is a freehand hair painting technique in which swatches of hair are carved out from the whole head of hair and painted with a lightening agent. This is done in revolutions around the head, and each painted swatch is then covered in cellophane. As these highlights are less systematically placed, the resulting look is more natural highlights. By contrast, foil highlights — which we’ll explain in greater detail below — produce a more symmetrical head of highlights.

We prefer the balayage look when we want something more dramatic. We recommend it for clients looking for a casual, beachy look. Lighter tips and an almost ombré appearance help to define this look. But, balayage, which requires higher volumes of peroxide, may not be the right choice for everyone. Always talk to your stylist before diving into any new process. We are the Best Hair Coloring Salons NYC!

best highlights salon nyc balayage highlights color correction

Foil highlights involve sectioning off hair and weaving or slicing strands — thick or thin depending on the look you’re going for — and painting them with a lightening agent before wrapping them in foil. The foil serves two purposes: It keeps the lightening agent from getting on the surrounding hair, and it keeps the product moist so it doesn’t dry up and weaken. We prefer this technique for its exactness. It produces a much more controlled look than balayage, and as colorists, we know precisely where the color is going and what shade of lightness will result. We believe that a skilled color artist can achieve many different looks with any technique or combination of techniques. Some stylists and their clients like the look that results from getting both high and lowlights.

Unlike highlights, which are lighter than the base strands, lowlights are darker strands of color that are woven into the hair.

And, as we’ve said it before: Always bring a photo with you to the salon. We advise clients against using technical/professional terms because it’s simply not as effective as displaying a photo of the look they hope to achieve. Leave the professional terms to the professionals 🙂
