Best Ombre Balayage Highlights Salons NYC. Difference Between Ombre & Balayage Highlights.

We, as hairstylists, know the difference between an Ombre, Sombre and Balayage Highlights. But we get asked this question ALL THE TIME! Or we get an appointment request for an “ombre balayage” and we are over here thinking, “Well, which one?!” So once again, we are here to set the record straight and share with you the difference between the two styles. Fine Artistik Salon is the Best Ombre Balayage Highlights Salons NYC!

best ombre balayage highlights salons nyc

OMBRE IS THE “STYLE” – The word ombre comes from the French word “shadow”. Ombre is the actual style. It is the transition of a lighter shade from a darker shade. Generally, ombres work best on brunettes because it is the least subtle of all the techniques, a sombre is what we would see on blondes. That technique is more subtle, hence the word sombre (soft-ombre). Ombre is great for the more daring girl, it is definitely more noticeable and typically stands out more. Ombre is kind of like color blocking, there are no dark pieces left on the bottom to help keep it natural, just a nice transition between the colors. While the ombre is a beautiful look, it is also something that needs to be done right! A bad ombre can make all the difference and please don’t try to do it on your own ladies! That’s the style called Homebre and no one wants that!

BALAYAGE IS THE “TECHNIQUE” – The two are very similar, but there are very obvious distinctions between the two! The word “Balayage” comes from another French word meaning “to sweep”. Now, if you have ever seen someone get a balayage in the salon, this probably makes sense to you. When applying the color for a balayage, you sweep the color through small triangle sections of the hair onto a board or foil, giving it the natural transition down into the lighter color. In Balayage, there are dark pieces left on the bottom to create dimension and a more natural look. This technique looks like natural sun-kissed highlights throughout the hair. The transition is more natural and it is less maintenance.

We use L’Oreal hair color and we also offer AMMONIA free bleach, the line of color with the highest quality for your hair. Our creative hair color specialists are Balayage Highlights educators for L’Oreal Professional that use the most advanced color to deliver beautiful shinny color for your hair. You can achieve so many different effects from soft, natural highlights to something strong and punky. The fact it’s so low maintenance is such a draw card for women too. People want to look fashionable and feel good about their appearance but in this day and age we don’t all have the time to be in the salon every few weeks for a touch up.

It’s also a very economical way to color your hair, as you never have a solid demarcation line or regrowth, so if you can’t afford to get it done for another month it won’t look atrocious. However, if your balayage isn’t done correctly you can end up with excessive overlapping that can cause damage which will lead to extremely dry hair and even hair breakage. That’s why you should only see a professional that specializes in Balayage hair painting technique. Now that you know the difference, are you comfortable with changing your hair up?! We sure hope so! Make an appointment today and get on trend! We look forward to hearing your comments and seeing your shares!

Best Highlights Salons Upper East Side NYC! What Are The Latest Hair Color Trends? If you love the perfectly imperfect hair color, then continue reading.

The new hair color—not exactly pink but rose gold — that many rock and has taken the social media by a storm is a perfect example of the slightly eccentric, imperfect but still chic look that has everyone talking. The warm, faded tint is a great compromise between normal blonde highlights and a vibrant, Katy Perry-style pink.

The colorist behind these creations is Jacob Amin. Fine Artistik Salon is one of the most hyped salons in NYC right now, and for good reason! Our clients list is impressive to say the least!

Rose Gold, Blue, Purple, Lavender, Silver, Gray, Metallic and Cool Pastel tones are always possible when you start as a blonde or have dark hair that is 100% natural (never colored).

First, your hair must be lightened enough so the pale color can stain it. For cooler colors like silver, violet, light blue, light gray or mint green, your hair color must be lifted to almost white. This is totally possible and works great if your hair is already bleached, highlighted blonde or is completely natural. It will take much longer to get natural darker colored hair light enough to take a pastel or silver color.

Warmer pastel tones like coral, pink, rose gold and lime green are a bit easier to achieve because the hair only needs to be lifted to a light yellow (pale yellow blonde). These colors also tend to last a bit longer. Pastel hair is a commitment. Of course, it’s one we feel is worth it. The results are amazing! Once you have a creative color, we advise you to wash your hair just once or twice a week to help hold the color. Because the hair is bleached it needs shampoo much less frequently. Our clients come in once a month to have us refresh the color.

The brighter, darker or richer your purple, pink, or gray is when you leave the salon the longer the color will last. The pastel fades with each wash, but we love the way it looks as it does.

Naturally dark hair is super easy to get beautiful and bright the first try! Bleach is no longer a scary chemical that damages natural hair. We offer the Olaplex Treatment to minimize the damage. With it, we can lift your original color and give you stunning rainbow colors on that very day. However, depending on the hair, it might take 4 hours, or sometimes 6-8 hours.

Previously colored hair (even grown and washed out for a whole year) can usually go really pretty and bright on the same day, unless the previous color is black or dark brown. In that case, we’d like to consult and make a plan with you.

As professionally trained hairstylists, we can only give you what your hair can handle. Unfortunately, all hair is not created equal and results may vary. We are not magicians or psychics and we do NOT work magic. Generally we recommend coming in for two or three appointments to get the hair to a bright blonde, white enough for that beautiful rose gold/pink/green/purple/blue/lavender and red to show. Consultations are required!

Best Color Correction Salons NYC. Best Balayage Highlights Correction Salons NYC! Color Disaster? No worries!

Hair coloring has come a long way in the last years. Where there used to be a few options, bleach blonde or henna red, there are now hundreds of different colors, shades, hues and tones. And these can all be mixed into highlights, lowlights, or all-over color. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed about all your color options for your dye job, you should definitely look into using a color specialist. Fine Artistik Salon NYC is known for being the Best Color Correction Salons NYC & Best Highlights Correction Salons NYC!

best color correction salons nyc

A hair color specialist will work with you to pick out the best hair colors for you, ones that will accentuate your best features, complement your skin tone and haircut, as well as make you feel confident with your hair color. Our specialists have been trained by L’Oreal Professionnel and know all about color, including the tones and hues that add dimension to hair color. And, if you’re going in for a cut and color, they can help you match your new hairstyle with a color that will fit perfectly.

Most of the duties of a color specialist are well-known by those who visit salons regularly. However, there’s a completely different side to these specialists that many overlook. Have you ever noticed your colorist running his or her hands through your hair? Bouncing it up and down and feeling the strands? This is how they learn about the texture of your hair. They take these seemingly small things into consideration when they start to make suggestions to you. They aren’t just concerned about your looks, but also the health of your hair. This is why they’ll suggest specific types and brands of hair products to you.

There’s a lot a color specialist does behind the scenes, too. Unlike store bought colors, most salons will mix their own dye, which means a specialist needs to know exactly what to mix to get the perfect shade for his or her clients. If you have a very specific color that you want, sometimes all it takes is a picture of the color for a specialist to be able to mix a matching color for you.

best balayage highlights correction salons nyc

One of the most common reasons to visit a color specialist is to correct a color job that has gone array. If you’ve ever dyed your hair at home and it comes out looking different than what was on the box, then you have a good idea about what color correction is about. A color specialist will look at the current color and determine what needs to be done to the hair for it to take on the correct color. Sometimes this will include using ammonia or ammonia free to lighten or stripe the hair color. In the end, they’ll send you off with the color you wanted in the first place.

A color specialist is an integral part of all salons. They can help you decide on colors that will flatter you the most. They’ll also walk you through what you need to do to keep your hair healthy and your new color staying in place. And, if you’ve had a bad coloring experience, they’ll help you fix the issue, so you get your wanted hair color.

Do you have a preferred look you are going for? Do you have maintenance requirements? There are many variables and making a choice is not easy. Look at a few real-life examples to see what you could end up going with. We are the best balayage ombre sombre highlights salons NYC!

Balayage a French coloring technique developed in the 70’s. It’s a freehand technique where lightener and/or color is applied to the hair in open air rather than using traditional foiling techniques (some foiling techniques may be used to get desired artistic look) with balyage we are able to create & mimic the natural lightening that occurs from the sun kissing your hair we like to describe it as “7 year old” blonde or bronde. Softening the root and regrowth Balayage allows you to go for longer periods between color appointments. Initially it may take multiple appointments (applications) to achieve desired lightness. Balayage works best on natural hair still beautiful effects are also achieved on previously colored hair. Many times Balayage is used to create the ombre or sombre look.

The three types most people prefer to go with, and that would be the balayage, ombre, and sombre. What does each one provide? Here are the comparisons between each style to help you decided which is best for you.

OMBRE HIGHLIGHTS: With the ombre, you are looking at a soft & gradual transition of color roots: dark, mid-shaft: medium, ends: bright, so it is going to be a soft transition. There is a gradual progression from one place of the head to the other. This is done on purpose for added effect.

best balayage highlights salons nyc olaplex treatment salons nyc

SOMBRE HIGHLIGHTS: When it comes to the sombre, you are going for a similar transition, but it is going to be far more gradual and reserved. The color is going to be spread to the bottom, but not as aggressively as seen with the ombre. The sombre is going to add color, but is more for those who want the contrast, but are lazier when it comes to how they maintain it. The sombre is easier in this regard. It still gives you that contrast you are going for, but it does not bother you when it comes to maintenance. SOMBRE stands for “Soft Ombre”.

BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS: Balayage, and this is where the color will look natural. It is going to be placed using a brush on a select few strands to create a natural look.
The balayage is for those who want a natural look that is not going to trouble them at all. They won’t even have to look at styling their hair because it will be that natural. The balayage is the best! You won’t feel like maintenance is needed until your next haircut. It is that naturally placed into your hair.

Any of these 3 options are an outstanding choice and will dictate how you feel about your beauty, hair and yourself. You don’t want to add color and then regret it, so choosing between these three options should be done with care. Also, always look to speak to our master stylist to see what they recommend.

Do hair extensions make your hair grow? The answer is no. Your hair grows with or without extensions. Your hair will continue to grow with hair extensions as long as you take care of your hair while wearing the hair extensions. As a matter of fact you may think that your hair is growing more with hair extensions in but its not growing any faster. You just now notice it growing more because most everyone’s hair grows about a half an inch per month. So with the tracks or bonds in your hair and maintenance required, you get to actually see how much your hair has grown.

Fine Artistik Salon is Top Hair Extensions Salon NYC and we known for being the Best Hair Extensions Salon NYC! Many will get hair extensions to wait out the time of growth. But will need a trim if you decide to remove your hair extensions. Just like ones own natural hair we need trims to get rid of splits ends.

With almost every salon globally doing Hair Extensions today, it is hard to determine “Who is the Best Hair Extensionist for me”.  If we can give you a couple words of advice: Be very careful of whom you let touch your hair. Many people offering hair extensions today have not been trained properly. They learn quick and jump to give discounts so they can practice on paying clients.

Hair Extensions is art! Long term experience, expertise and skill are a requirement (cosmetology schools do not teach hair extensions). Be wary, you will end up spending more money and precious time to have this expensive investment fixed. Many discounted salons are also selling you synthetic hair to make more money. We truly care about everyone who is thinking about getting hair extensions. Not only should the Hair Extensions technician be well trained and Certified but YOU should be trained as well on proper hair care techniques. THIS IS CRITICAL!! *Remember* this is your hair! You must put complete trust into the one that will touch it.

When dealing with the Strand by Strand Hair Extension Method (keratin bond/keratin fusions/cold fusion) many will try to sell you on number of pieces as the strands come in different weights! If someone tells you that they will give you 250 pieces (strands) if the weight is .5 grams you will have very stringy hair. Our strands are 1 gram each. This will give you the fullness, not a bunch of strings.

While receiving your hair makeover, rest assured that the hair you purchased is from a company that is devoted to sourcing hair ethically and is doing their part in supporting local communities. SHE by SoCapUSA is one of the top rated hair extension companies on the market today, so it was only fitting that it was our #1 choice for our clients. We welcome you to step into our NYC location for a complimentary consultation with our certified hair extension specialist.

Best Hair Salons In NYC For Highlights. Balayage vs. Foils Highlights

Best Hair Salons in NYC for Highlights. Balayage Highlights vs. Foils Highlights & What are lowlight.

ARE YOU ASKING FOR THE RIGHT KIND OF HIGHLIGHTS? In our many years as hair colorists, it surprised us to learn that a lot of women don’t really know the difference between a highlight and a lowlight, let alone the different techniques for achieving the former, arguably more popular, look. We are the Best Hair Salons in NYC for Highlights! Many know the terms for the processes — namely, foils and balayage — but they don’t often understand what’s involved in each one. Before you go to the salon seeking high or lowlights, arm yourself with some of the basics — and a photo!

“Highlights” is a general term that refers to strands of hair that are lighter than the base color they’re being laid upon. It’s commonly believed that a highlight is blonde, but actually a highlight only refers to a color that’s not as dark as the base strands. The size of the highlights, the level of lightness, the tone, and the placement are all left up to the colorist — after you’ve communicated the look you’re going for, of course. Highlights aren’t a one-size-fits-all, and neither is the way they are administered. Moreover, the type of highlight depends on a number of things: the look you want, the kind of hair you have, how blonde or how much lighter you wish to go. A rundown of the three main types of highlighting techniques, plus an explanation of lowlights, may help you decide what to ask for at your next color appointment.

best hair salons in nyc for highlights balayage

People with thick, heavy hair, who like the look of chunkier highlights with more contrast (a stripier, less all-over blonde), should look into balayage. A French word meaning “to sweep,” balayage actually refers to the sweeping motion produced by the brush when the colorist paints swatches of hair.

Balayage is a freehand technique in which swatches of hair are carved out from the whole head of hair and painted with a lightening agent. This is done in revolutions around the head, and each painted swatch is then covered in cellophane. As these highlights are less systematically placed, the resulting look is fatter highlights. By contrast, foil highlights — produce a more symmetrical head of highlights.

We prefer the balayage look when we want something more dramatic. We recommend it for clients looking for a casual, beachy look. Lighter tips and an almost ombré appearance help to define this look. But, balayage, which requires higher volumes of peroxide, may not be the right choice for everyone. Always talk to your stylist before diving into any new process.

Now, if you’re looking for a very symmetrical highlight, foils might be the way to go. For clients interested in more of an all-over blonde look, foil highlights which are administered on top of and underneath the hair, are an excellent option. Foils can blend more with your natural base color than balayage resulting in a more even distribution of lightening.

Foil highlights involve sectioning off hair and weaving strands — thick or thin depending on the look you’re going for — and painting them with a lightening agent before wrapping them in foil. The foil serves two purposes: It keeps the lightening agent from getting on the surrounding hair and it keeps the product moist so it doesn’t dry up and weaken. We prefer this technique for its exactness. It produces a much more controlled look than balayage and as a colorists we know precisely where the color is going and what shade of lightness will result.

best hair salons in nyc for highlights balayage nyc

In spite of some personal preference on the two techniques described above we believe that a skilled color artist can achieve many different looks with any technique or combination of techniques. Some stylists and their clients like the look that results from getting both high and lowlights.

Unlike highlights which are lighter than the base strands lowlights are darker strands of color that are woven into the hair that is lighter. This process typically produces depth and adds contrast when hair becomes overly light and one-dimensionally colored from being highlighted repeatedly. General oxidation and/or fading can occur from regular highlighting which is another reason someone might opt to even things out with lowlights.

A great technique to keep hair from becoming washed-out and monochromatic lowlights should also be monitored since over time your ends may become dark and muddy from over-processing. Greater than the decision you make on your hair style and color however is choosing your stylist.

And we’ve said it before but it bears repeating: Always bring a photo with you to the salon. We advise clients against using technical/professional terms because it’s simply not as effective as displaying a photo of the look they hope to achieve.

Best Hair Color Salons NYC. Home Color vs. Salon Color!

Best Hair Color Salons NYC. Home Hair Coloring vs. Salon Professional Coloring!

Best Hair Color Salons NYC. Surprisingly we get a lot of clients that look at us puzzled when we say that box color is bad for their hair! We’ve always known this to be common knowledge and a few of those reasons you can guess without any background in hair color. We hear clients say things like “Doesn’t all color make your hair dry?” and “The box doesn’t say anything about that!”

One size does not fit all. We consider box color to be “one size fits all”. The idea of something like this is not perceivable in the world of professional haircolor and it cannot be relied upon. In order to achieve the color you want a stylist considers several factors and customizes a formula with different hues to make the perfect shade. Box color is made so that it can potentially alter a wide range of hair types & shades with no guarantee. We may choose to use a 3% developer on one person and 9% on another with the same color but the outcome will be immensely different. Most box colors use 12% or higher to ensure that it will at least do something to any hair type and that’s just getting dangerous!

As a woman do you believe in one size fits all pants? We certainly don’t!

Hair color must be customized for each person. We are all unique in many ways and that applies to hair as well. We mentioned that professional stylists must consider several factors in order to give you a proper color service. For those who don’t realize the thought process it takes to come up with your formula we’re going to give a brief overview. Here are the main factors we consider when customizing your color service:
Natural level & underlying pigment. Skin Tone. Level of Porosity. Previous artificial pigments. Percentage of gray (if any) and more!

Do you know what demi, semi and permanent really means? In the world of box color there isn’t a whole lot of difference between demi, semi, and permanent haircolor. Yes, the box may claim that it washes out in a month… but will it? In most cases it doesn’t. This goes back to customization again, even with colors that “wash out” there has to be a process to consider what level and shade will give you what you’re looking for.

It’s important to remember that no color really washes out completely. In the salon there is a huge difference between the three types and each option has its own factors for successful application. There is no way that a box can figure out all of those things for you. There is ONE exception when it comes to finding a hair color that washes out. That would be semi-permanent (temporary color), and it is in a completely different category whether you are talking about box or professional color. Temporary colors only stain the outside of the hair strand and should last 1 to 2 weeks at most. There can still be a hinkering of tint left depending on how light your hair is.

The outcome of box color is usually an unwanted new haircut. Do you like your hairstyle? Whether it’s long or short… it doesn’t really matter because we’ve seen these disasters with all lengths. Damage is almost certain with repetitive use of box color. Generally… the ends to the mid-shaft are affected, and in some extreme cases it can be worse. We’ve all seen those dry, frizzy ends on someones hair… and there isn’t much a flat iron can do for that. There comes a point where if you want your hair to look good again-cutting a few inches off is the only option.
