Best Hair Color Salons NYC! Traditional Foil Highlights vs. Balayage Highlights. Which to choose?

The big debate: balayage highlights vs foils highlights? If you’re a ride-or-die full highlight girl, your stylist has most likely tried to transition your highlights to balayage. But, if you’re still in the dark about the painting technique, and iffy about whether or not it’s for you, we’ve got your answers. We are the Best Hair Color Salons NYC & Best Balayage Highlights Salons NYC!

best hair color salons nyc fine artistik salon nyc

SO, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TECHNIQUES?

Foil lightens the hair from the root to the ends while balayage allows the hair to be softer or natural at the root, and then gets progressively lighter as it travels through to the end. The grow out is less obvious with balayage, you can go months without touching it up. We feel sometimes traditional foils can look a little patterny and we like a more free style.

Although balayage is known to process without foils, we still like to use foils when we balayage “foliage” because the foil helps to speed up the process and can lift the hair lighter than balayage.

Foliage is the perfect combination of balayage and foiled highlights. Right now, we see that clients love and want ashy, platinum, sun-kissed hair and we feel that we can achieve this look by combining these two methods into foliage. At Fine Artistik Salon, we hand paint pieces of hair where we want it in a foil. We feel that using a foil can more consistently pull the clients’ hair past the brassy stage. We are the best hair color salons NYC! Our product line & color line is the best in the beauty industry today. We are a proud L’Oreal Professionnel salon in NYC.

WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE ONE METHOD OVER THE OTHER? WHAT IS THE END RESULT OF EACH?

The end result of a foil highlight is a more consistent and pattern-based look, while a balayage hand  will result in a look that is more free-hand and organic.

If you’re looking to have more of an all-over blonde look, we have more control when we paint in the foil, and can also control exactly how light or dark I want the blonde to be. The end result for traditional highlights is an overall lighter look. The end result for balayage is a slightly darker root melted into lighter ends, which we love!

If you’re more into an over all blonder look or all over highlights, we would go for the foils, because balayage a lot of the time won’t go as blonde as foils unless you are willing to spend a few extra hours in the salon so the colorist may re-balayage your hair to go lighter.

NOW THAT YOU HAVE A GOOD CONCEPT OF THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO TECHNIQUES, HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH METHOD IS THE BEST OPTION FOR YOU?

If you’re an effortless beauty or slightly edgy girl, we would recommend balayage, having your ends pop brighter. If you are a classic traditional girl, we would recommend getting foils, giving you an all over light look.

The method depends more on the client’s hair. If the hair is virgin, then balayage is a great option. For us, the foliage technique is better for achieving the ‘it-look.’ Blonder without brass.

WE ALL KNOW BLEACHING YOUR HAIR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE. IS THERE A METHOD THAT IS MORE OR LESS DAMAGING THAN THE OTHER?

Each process, foiled highlights and balayage, need not result in damaged hair as long as the colorist stays aware of the processing time required to maintain the healthy condition of the hair and the desired end result. If you’ve previously boxed dyed your hair or it’s been professionally colored with darker tones, to minimize the damage we offer the OLAPLEX Treatment & SMARTBOND Treatment by L’Oreal Professionnel.

When you do traditional highlights you are generally only lightening the new growth, but when you balayage you continue to lighten the already-lightened hair so it is more likely to become damaged. Our salon has been mentioned in numerous magazines as the best hair color salons NYC!

Either technique can lift the hair with minimal damage; That’s why it is critically important to see a professional colorist, someone that can guide you safely to beautiful hair color that doesn’t leave your hair damaged.

DEPENDING IF YOU ARE ON TOP OF YOUR SALON GAME GOING TO SEE YOUR STYLIST EVERY 4-6 WEEKS, OR YOU ARE A TWICE A YEAR GAL, WHAT DOES THE UPKEEP AND MAINTENANCE LOOK LIKE FOR EITHER OF THESE TECHNIQUES?

For traditional highlights, clients tend to come back between 6-8 weeks, but when balayage is done a client can go anywhere between 3-4 months. With balayage, you can go anywhere from 2-6 months without touching up. The longer you wait the more of the ombré look you will be creating, but if done correctly the grow out should seamless.

We suggests getting yourself on a routine schedule for any coloring service. Whenever you get your hair colored, it makes good sense to put yourself on a 3-month maintenance schedule. The length of the schedule can vary, of course, depending on how much of a “natural look” you want. If the look that interests you is more “un-natural” than natural, your hair will require significantly more maintenance.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GETTING UNICORN HAIR

Unicorn hair is all about mixing an array of different pastel colors together to create a fun, versatile look that, despite its many colors, seems to pair well with just about anything. There’s something to be said about a serious style statement – and when it’s done in pretty pastels, you better believe people will turn heads.

The trick to creating a buzz-worthy unicorn ‘do is to keep the shades light and airy. Where other trendy hair colors may be all about full coverage from roots to tips, unicorn hair is more about a series of chunky colors applied with a balayage technique so that they can seamlessly transition into one another for a gorgeous, color melding look.

Like clockwork, magazines publish articles on which hair shades work best for which skin tones. Most of the time, they focus on the natural range between platinum blonde and deep black. Well, this is the year of unicorn hair, and such limited advice simply won’t do. But, if you’re craving a rainbow-tinted head, it’s hard enough to decide which color to pick, let alone whether you want a pastel, a jewel tone, or an even deeper shade.

Wondering what unseen-in-nature tint would look best on you? Experts agree that, just like with natural hues, the answer is in your skin tone. Anyone can wear any color, but it’s all about placement and saturation… The way to go about this is doing something that will make you look your best. Pastel shades & tones are not meant to look natural. They’re meant to standout!

Since unicorn hair is comprised of many different colors, consider visiting a professional colorist to get the look, the hair colorist will expertly be able to place the shades. What’s more, remember that when you’re dyeing your hair pastel colors, you’ll need to bleach your strands first in order for the colors to show up. So, the darker your base shade, the more work it’ll require to achieve your desired effect.

Best Balayage Highlights Hair Color Salons NYC. Balayage Highlights vs. Standard Traditional Highlights!

Balayage Hair Color Ideas with Blonde, Brown and Caramel Highlights. Balayage hair color is a French technique that is the latest dye trend to gain international popularity. The goal is to create soft, natural-looking highlights that look more modern than traditional coloring methods. We are the best balayage highlights hair color salons NYC!

Balayage Definition: What is Balayage and Why Do We Love It?

As opposed to standard highlighting methods that use foil or a cap, balayage is strictly freehand where the color is painted on. You can amplify the hue to vary from a soft wash to bright and bold depending on your personal preference. Outside of very short cropped hair, it can work on a variety of hair lengths, textures and colors, making it truly universal and flattering for all women. Most are drawn towards it because the maintenance level is relatively low; many are able to go four months between color treatments.

Balayage hair color options within brown palette are endless. You can go into reddish (caramel and auburn) tones of brown or try golden shades varying from browns to blondes. In case you would like a more neutral solution, it looks like this: dark brown for the under layer, medium browns washed to the lightest ash hues towards the ends and very light thin ribbons of brown blonde throughout the length here and there. Fine Artistik Salon is Voted Best Balayage Highlights Hair Color Salons NYC!

If you want to wear your hair down, a medium-length layered haircut is the best choice. If it’s bold and choppy, support its spirit with a dramatic balayage job. Graze the ends of the layers with a shade much lighter than your base color. Light caramel brown on black is a pretty good idea. Reddish tones of brown are also a very popular solution in balayage. You may start with chocolate brown or dark burgundy as the darkest base color and then pair it with chunky caramel highlights which of course need a sprinkling of blonde to set off the used colors.

Balayage vs. Ombre – which is the best for you? Actually, you don`t have to choose just one of them. This look blends two hair coloring techniques – ombre and balayage to achieve an effect of gorgeous dimensional waves effortlessly cascading down through their natural curves and bends.

best balayage highlights hair color salons nyc upper east side nyc

Most examples of balayage on the Internet feature long hair. But shoulder-length locks also look very beautiful with ombre and with balayage. Brunettes who want to lighten up their hair significantly may go this cute idea with a light brown tone around the face, dark blonde at the ends and a sprinkling of the lightest blonde throughout the length. It’s not the common streaking. The major benefit of this dye technique is creating dimension in the hair. If you enjoy being a brunette, opt for medium-toned brown balayage hair, remaining on your natural dark brown base. This color will look beautiful on medium length layered haircuts for wavy hair.

A modern textured bob worn effortlessly in loose tousled waves always wins from subtle touches of color called to enhance the texture and dimension of your medium length hair when you wear it undone. Sometimes you don’t want additional colors to distract from the beauty of your healthy flowing locks. In this case subtle balayage highlights, a little bit more intense for the face-framing strands, are exactly what is needed. An exquisite compliment, but not an overshadowing attraction.

When you like the idea of lighter ends, but want to wrap it into the most popular today coloring approach, go for balayage ombre. In this particular look the beach waves seem to melt towards the ends – the most relaxed look ever! Dark brown hair and balayage highlights complement each other beautifully, as evidenced by this gorgeous hair color choice. With the chocolate brown base diluted with caramel highlights, this is absolutely a fuss-free and flattering look. The undone waves placed throughout also keep this look modern and fresh.

Best Hair Color Correction NYC. What Is Hair Color Correction?

Best Hair Color Correction NYC. We are L’Oreal Professionnel Best Hair Color Correction Salons NYC!

A “color correction” is meant to fix a color service that had undesirable results. Most people can understand that a color correction is needed for brassy, orange highlights, or at-home color that came out differently than desired (picture green or jet black hair instead of medium brown). Fine Artistik Salon is the Best Hair Color Correction NYC salon! Something that may seem like an easy fix or regular color service, though, isn’t always so cut-and-dry.

best hair color correction nyc

Some color corrections can be simple, like doing a toner to cut out gold, but others can be a triple-process to lift dark color out. The latter is where time and cost can drastically increase.

Could the dark brown color you’ve been getting professionally colored for 6 years need to be “corrected” to get cool blonde highlights? Absolutely! Even though you’ve been getting desired results from your stylist for a long time, you need to remember that changing things up may be more difficult than you think.

In the salon environment, stylists see a color correction as when a guest wants to take previously colored hair at least 2 levels lighter or take previously colored or virgin hair at least 2 levels darker.

SO, WHAT HAPPENS DURING A COLOR CORRECTION? When hair gets lightened, color is actually being taken out, not put in. Unfortunately, other things come out along with the color, such as protein, leaving the hair damaged. If it needs to be lightened again and again, that’s more structural elements that are being removed, too. To minimize the damage in the hair  and to maintain its integrity we offer the OLAPLEX treatment and L’Oreal Professionnel Smartbond treatment.

Many times, overzealous stylists think they can do a color correction in one sitting and end up damaging the hair structurally so much that the only fix is a substantial haircut. One way to protect your hair from a ton of damage is to spread out the service over a couple weeks. While you won’t leave the salon with the desired result in one day, you will leave with your hair still on your head.

BEST HAIR COLOR CORRECTION NYC. BEST BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS SALONS NYC.

If a color turned out too light or the guest wants to go a lot darker, the hair will need to be “filled.” “Filling” means depositing pigment back into the hair. This isn’t as simple as picking a color and putting it on; that’s how you end up with muddy or green colors. Once the hair is filled, it will need to be colored at least once more to get a desired shade.

best hair color correction salons nyc

Because a color correction can be more involved, the cost will most times be substantially higher. Some stylists charge $100-$200 per hour for a service that could take 5 hours to complete. That cost reflects the amount of color used and the amount of time your stylist needs to work on your hair.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO WARN YOUR STYLIST ABOUT A POTENTIAL COLOR CORRECTION? First, if you are a blonde and have multiple shades and toner in your hair that are brassy (usually that happens if you keep switching between hair colorists or if the bleach wasn’t left long enough). Don’t assume that a full head of highlights will fix that. Certain blonde shades are extremely difficult to achieve or correct. Brunettes & Red heads are a bit easier but definitely not easy! Any color is a challenge.

While most color corrections aren’t that drastic, your stylist does need to know what to expect when a guest sits in his or her chair. If you scheduled a one-color process and it needs to be a four-process correction, the 2-hour appointment just doubled in length. Not only that, but the next two hours of her day just had to be rescheduled on very short notice.

A good idea for anyone contemplating a drastic change (see: what a stylist sees as a correction), or anyone who had an unfortunate experience with color, is to contact their stylist before they schedule an appointment. He or she may want to see a picture of what you have color-wise, and what you want. An in-salon consultation may also be needed before your stylist will schedule the service.

Best Hair Extensions Salons in NYC. Top Hair Extensions Salons NYC!

Best Hair Extensions Salons in NYC. Choosing a hair extension method can be overwhelming!

Hair extensions are the most luxurious salon service available. It instantly adds length, volume & body! Using different colors and shades of hair extensions it even adds chemical-free highlights with hair extensions within minutes to under an hour. Fine Artistik Salon is the Top Hair Extensions Salons NYC! Choosing a hair extension method can be overwhelming, as there are so many different options available on the market. Choosing a method that works best for you depends on several factors, including hair type, lifestyle, and budget. We are the Best Hair Extensions Salons in NYC!

best hair extensions salons in nyc

Hair extension methods can be broken down into four different attachments; strand by strand, weft, clip extensions, and micro-link skin weft. Below you will find more information for the different methods, including, budget, pros, cons, and recommended maintenance.

Strand by strand technique is where extensions with a glue bond are attached to small pieces of your hair using warm or cold application techniques. Strands of about 20 to 30 individual hairs can be attached with either a glue application point or with a micro link. Most companies that offer a bonded strand by strand refer to this method as a keratin bond.

HOT FUSION OR KERATIN BOND HAIR EXTENSIONS: Keratin U-tip bonds lined with silicone are attached to the hair using a heating element. Your hair is placed between the U-tip and sealed with a hot extension tool that melts the bond to your hair. The silicone lining of the U-tip creates a barrier to protect your natural hair. The bonds are attached close to the root, leaving some space to allow natural movement of your hair.

The cost for strand by strand hair extensions depends on the brand, how many strands are added, and in which city they’re applied.

Pros: Most suitable for coarse, thick hair. Hair extensions can last up to six months with proper maintenance, making this type of application the most durable.

WE ARE THE TOP HAIR EXTENSIONS SALONS NYC! Best Hair Extensions Salons in NYC!

COLD FUSION, MICRO-LONKS OR I-TIP: Hair extension method where small sections of your hair are pulled through a small bead or lock and clamped shut with a special tool. Reputable companies use copper cylinders lined with silicone to protect your natural hair.

The cost for strand by strand hair extensions depends on the brand, how many strands are added, and in which city they’re applied.

Pros: Since the extensions are individual strands, the hair moves a little more naturally. The application uses no heat or glue and can last up six months. Hair is reusable, and any extensions that may have slid down or off can be fixed in about an hour by an experienced technician.

top hair extensions salons nyc

TAPE-IN HAIR EXTENSIONS: Tape in hair extensions is the newest method of extensions available. They are applied using either double or single-sided polyurethane tape. With double-sided tape, the weft is applied to the hair after the backing has been removed from one side. The weft and the attached hair are pulled upwards, and another weft is applied to the other side of the tape to “sandwich” the hair. Clients with extremely thin hair, especially around the temples and side of the head, may require a single panel applied with single-sided tape.

The cost for tape in extension can vary depending on the brand, type of hair, stylist’s application fee and number of boxes or panels of hair.

Pros: Fastest method of application. Volume applications take 30-45 minutes and full-length application 45-60 minutes. No heat or tools required for an application. Panels lay flat on the head, virtually undetectable. Suitable for thin, fine hair. The safest method of hair extensions available, as the weight of the panel is spread out over a larger area, causing no damage to the client’s hair. Reusable method of extensions, lasts between 6-8 weeks.

Best Hair Salon For Highlights NYC. Best Highlights Hair Salons NYC!

Best Hair Salon For Highlights NYC. Want a natural look? A multi-dimension look?

After a bit of extra light in your hair? Whether you want to restore radiance to dull hair or just fancy a change of color, highlights are the easiest way to transform your shade to something altogether much more interesting. We are the best hair salon for highlights NYC and we are known for being the best highlights hair salons NYC! Which one is right for you and what do you need to know before you commit to your new color? If you dream of having multi-dimensional shades running through your hair like Jennifer Lopez or five shades of chocolate a la Kristen Stewart then highlights or lowlights are what you need to ask your stylist for.

best hair salon for highlights nyc

HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS TECHNIQUE: Lowlights and highlights are essentially partial coloring techniques, adding a different shade to certain strands of hair so your barnet ends up having depth, texture and various complementary hues.

The technique used differs from block color hair dyeing and involves sectioning off the hair to target the parts you want transformed. This way you can have a multi-hued more natural looking finish. Celebs like Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lawrence are great ambassadors for highlights and lowlights as their hair is always full of light and dark accents which adds body, movement and interest to their lush locks.

To achieve highlights we will use a paste usually containing a bleaching agent and peroxide. We then apply it to the hair using a special brush and either foils (strips of foil or plastic used to separate strands of hair from the rest) or saran wrap for a balayage affect.

Best Hair Salon For Highlights NYC. Best Highlights Hair Salons NYC.

Unlike a full hair color (usually called permanent or semi-permanent dyeing) you can choose to have a full-head or half-head of highlights. This means you can simply have the top of your hair dyed leaving the underneath natural – although if you wear your hair up a lot, then this doesn’t look great. You can also have a T-section or infills done to maintain the look as your roots begin to show. This means only a small section of the roots on the top of your head are re-dyed. We are a L’Oreal Professionnel Hair Salon in NYC!

WHY HAVE HIGHLIGHTS OR LOWLIGHTS? Highlights or lowlights are perfect if you want to give your barnet a bit of a color boost, they’re also a great way to start off dyeing your hair for the first time as you retain some of your natural shade too.

They allow you to have a sun-kissed effect with lighter strands running through your hair in a just-back-from-holiday hue. They’re also great for lighting up the face; illuminating and injecting life into your hair’s color can work wonders for your skin tone! It’s advised to have them done before the summer to prevent the color changing after exposure to the sun.

best highlights hair salons nyc

Note that lowlights and highlights aren’t the same as streaks, which can be also done with saran wrap or foil. Streaks have a larger, more blocky effect on the hair than lowlights and highlights and are much more noticeable – the benefit of highlights and lowlights is that they have a really natural finish.

LOWLIGHTS VS. HIGHLIGHTS: Lowlights involve darkening strands of hair by using colors that are darker than your natural color. In contrast, highlights use colors that are lighter than your natural shade.

WHO CAN CONSIDER HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS? People with all hair types can have lowlights and highlights, whether it’s straight, curly or frizzy. On curls, this technique gives more depth and on the straightest of hair, it gives the illusion of more volume.

It’s true that blonde lowlights and highlights are a big trend but more chocolatey tones are also very popular – think Kristen Stewart or Mila Kunis.

As well as the classic lowlight/highlight technique, there are variations to play with too. “Dip-dye” AKA “Ombre” hair color, which involves lowlights on the roots and highlights on the ends, is one trend that keeps on going – and is a fun way to play with color – just check out Olivia Palermo!

Best Salon For Highlights In NYC! Highlights Or Lowlights? Balayage?

Best Salon For Highlights in NYC. Best Highlights Salons NYC. Are You Asking For The Right Kind Of Highlights?

In our many years as hair colorist, it surprises us to learn that a lot of people don’t really know the difference between a highlight and a lowlight, let alone the different techniques for achieving the former, arguably more popular, look. Many of my clients know the terms for the processes — namely, foils and balayage — but don’t often understand what’s involved in each one. Before you go to the salon seeking high or lowlights, arm yourself with some of the basics — and a photo!  We are the best salon for highlights in NYC and our reputation is known for being the best highlights salons NYC!

best salon for highlights in nyc best highlights salons nyc

As hairstylists up-to-date on the latest fashion trends, we know the difference between a head full of foils, balayage, and ombre. But, as style seeking clients, do you know which is what? We are here to share with you the difference between these styles to help suit your needs, desires and keep you on trend. But, most of all help you know what to ask for.

FULL-HEAD / HALF-HEAD HIGHLIGHTS: Traditionally, full or partial highlights and lowlights isolate selected strands of hair and treat them with a color, lightener, or toner within foils. If applied evenly throughout the entire head, using weaving and slicing techniques, foils create a natural blend that mimics the way hair changes color over time in the sun. Thus, adding a sense of dimension, texture, and complimentary hues to the existing hair. Foils are the most traditional way of restoring radiance to dull hair or infusing a few different shades to the hair, but do not have as a dramatic result as block coloring.

“Highlights” is a general term that refers to strands of hair that are lighter than the base color they’re being laid upon. It’s commonly believed that a highlight is blonde, but actually a highlight only refers to a color that’s not as dark as the base strands. Highlights aren’t a one-size-fits-all, and neither is the way they are administered. Moreover, the type of highlight depends on a number of things: the look you want, the kind of hair you have, how blonde you wish to go. A rundown of the three main types of highlighting techniques, plus an explanation of lowlights, may help you decide what to ask for at your next color appointment.

Best Salon For Highlights in NYC. Best Highlights Salons NYC. OLAPLEX

WHAT ARE LOWLIGHTS: Unlike highlights, which are lighter than the base strands, lowlights are darker strands of color that are woven into the hair. This process typically produces depth and adds contrast when hair becomes overly light and one-dimensionally colored from being highlighted repeatedly. General oxidation and/or fading can occur from regular highlighting, which is another reason someone might opt to even things out with lowlights. A great technique to keep hair from becoming washed-out and monochromatic, lowlights should also be monitored, since, over time, your ends may become dark and muddy from over-processing. Greater than the decision you make on your hair style and color, however, is choosing your stylist.

best balayage highlights salons nyc best olaplex treatment salons nyc

LOOKING INTO BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS? Balayage involves a stylist hand painting highlights so they look even more natural, with depth and dimension that resemble the effects of the sun. Balayage means ‘sweeping’ in French, and is a reference to the sweeping motions of the painting process. When painting, stylists start at the middle of the strand and sweep out toward the root or tip. As a result, there is no severe line of color at the root and the grow-out is more natural looking, which translates into longer-lasting results. Dark pieces are left throughout the bottom to create dimension and keep a more natural look.

We prefer the balayage look when we want something more dramatic. We also recommend it for clients looking for a casual, beachy look. Lighter tips and an almost ombré appearance help to define this look. But, balayage, which requires higher volumes of peroxide, may not be the right choice for everyone. To minimize the damage we offer the OLAPLEX TreatmentL’Oreal Professionnel SMARTBOND. Either way, always talk to your stylist before diving into any new process.

Now, that you have a better understanding about these different looks, are you ready for a change? The hardest part about finding someone to achieve these looks is making sure your stylist knows the proper techniques to keep your hair beautiful and healthy. As masters of our craft, we have been receiving so much buzz for our work! So be sure to make an appointment today and stay on trend!

Balayage is the “Technique”. The word “Balayage” comes from another French word meaning “to sweep”. Now, if you have ever seen someone get a balayage in the salon, this probably makes sense to you. When applying the color for a balayage, you sweep the color through small triangle sections of the hair onto a board or foil, giving it the natural transition down into the lighter color. In Balayage, there are dark pieces left on the bottom to create dimension and a more natural look. This technique looks like natural sun-kissed highlights throughout the hair. The transition is more natural and it is less maintenance than an ombre. Looking for the best balayage highlights salon in New York City? You’ve found us! Balayage (pronounced bah-lee-ahh-shh) is a technique a stylist uses to highlight your hair, and can be used to achieve many different looks. With balayage, also known as hair painting, the lightener is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect from end to root and is all about creating beautiful blends of multi-dimensional color. Sometimes a stylist will use cellophanes, foils or mesh strips to separate the sections from bleeding on each other. That part doesn’t matter — it’s still called balayaging. Every stylist has their own unique method to get the job done.

The two are very similar, but there are very obvious distinctions between the two! Best Balayage Highlights NYC.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that balayage is old news or so not in style! It is and always will be. First of all, it’s not just a look. Balayage is a very difficult technique that stylists have to pay thousands of dollars (and hundreds of hours) to master and perfect. And while that might sound like a steep investment to learn something called “hair painting,” those hours and dollars are well spent! Stylists who are good at creating this ultra-versatile effect get to charge the big bucks. Especially because, when done right, balayage results in a very low-maintenance look, unlike your 6-8 week foil touch up.

Ombre is the “Style”. The word ombre comes from the French word “shadow”. Ombre is the actual style. It is the transition of a lighter shade from a darker shade. Generally, ombres work best on brunettes because it is the least subtle of all the techniques, a sombre is what we would see on blondes. That technique is more subtle, hence the word sombre. Ombre is great for the more daring girl, it is definitely more noticeable and typically more maintenance. Ombre is kind of like color blocking, there are no dark pieces left on the bottom to help keep it natural, just a nice transition between the colors. While the ombre is a beautiful look, it is also something that needs to be done right! A bad ombre can make all the difference and please don’t try to do it on your own ladies! That’s the style called Homebre and no one wants that! Click HERE to scroll through our Instagram page for a few examples of some Balayage & Ombres that we have done.

If you bleach or color your hair, you’re probably well-versed in Olaplex treatment. Sure, you might not know exactly how the magic strengthening treatment works to repair your stripped strands, but you know if you don’t use it at least once a week, you’ll never hear the end of it from your colorist. Because of Olaplex’s success, you may have noticed other brands are coming out with similar treatments. Best L’Oreal Professionnel hair color salons NYC! Case in point: L’Oréal Professionnel Smartbond, which debuted in salons this month. So the question is, how similar—or different—is this new treatment?

L’Oréal Professionnel Smartbond is a two-step, in-salon treatment that protects and strengthens hair during the coloring and/or lightening process, and is touted to brighten and soften dyed hair over time, whereas the in-salon (and at-home) Olaplex system rebuilds the damaged disulfide bonds (the stuff that gives your hair elasticity) that are broken during the chemical process.

Although both treatments sound super similar, as both work inside the hair shaft to renew colored-treated strands, there are still vast differences between the two.

With the Smartbond system, the malic acid is added to the color and absorbs into the hair shaft during the chemical process. It does not react with the broken bonds in any way as the Olaplex does—it acts as a lubricant between protein chains to make hair not as brittle and to give it more elasticity.

Olaplex, on the other hand, works via chemical reaction to rebuild strength by mending disulfide bonds. When you go through the coloring process, some of the bonds that are responsible for the strength of the hair are broken and once they’re broken, the hair loses strength and is more susceptible to breakage.

Because Olaplex is already trusted in the hair-color world New York City & Hollywood’s top colorists — L’Oréal Professionnel had more than 700 stylists and colorists test the stuff during development. The result? Nothing less than a few praise hands emoji.

Smartbond really helps achieve any color correction without drying or damaging the hair in any way, shape, or form. It makes the hair soft, strengthens the hair, and doesn’t slow the coloring process down at all. Smartbond can also be added to gloss to condition the hair. For those who are looking to brighten and protect recently dyed strands, beginning this month, Fine Artistik Salon L’Oréal Professionnel Smartbond services are available in salon, starting at $65. And an at-home conditioner using the Smartbond technology will become available on June 1 for $28.

The key ingredient in Smartbond is maleic acid, L’Oréal’s Senior Scientific Advisor, Atoshi George explains. “It acts like a mopper-up of bleaching agents and helps some of the weaker bonds to reform.” Smartbond also contains a patented blend of ceramides and polymers, which have to be fine-tuned to give optimum results: “Even one percent difference in the balance of polymers and ceramides can throw the whole formula off,” Atoshi warns. “It’s a very fine line between creating something that will nourish the hair and something that’ll make it look greasy.”

Smartbond is like insurance for the hair. It protects the bonds from breakage in the first place, and the maleic acid helps some of the weaker bonds to repair themselves. That being said, we don’t have any concrete numbers that prove it can actually reform the bonds themselves”, Atoshi says. Unlike Olaplex, it can’t magically sew those bonds back together but, prevention is often better than a cure. No matter how well-reformed those bonds are, they’ll never be like new. And at the end of the day, it’s about how your hair looks and feels – you could have countless bonds repaired and still feel like your hair is a bit lacklustre.
