Best Hair Salons Highlights NYC Balayage Ombre Highlights! From foils highlights to ombre highlights to balayage highlights & More!

The difference between a traditional foil highlight and a balayage is remarkable! The phrase “balayage” developed from the French and in truth means “to sweep;” this coloring method emerged from Paris in the 1970’s! A balayage is a leading-edge, highlighting technique in which the hair color is painted on in a creative way. The strokes where the color is placed creates very graduated, natural-looking highlights without developing a noticeable or obvious root. We are the best hair salons highlights NYC balayage ombre highlights!

A large pool of celebrities and modern models showcase this technique and due to extremely high demand and beauty trends, all salons now offer this low maintenance service. Many guests do get their balayage touched up and lightened as often as a traditional foil highlight, but for those of you who don’t want to come in every 6-12 weeks to get their hair foiled to the root can wait in between many more appointments for a balayage touch up. This can be done as little as twice a year if that’s how low maintenance the guest wants it, it is all relative to what are your specific hair needs, and what is in your beauty budget.

Out with the old and in with the new? We think so! Balayage is here to stay. Balayage is more than a trend, its a technique, and a very difficult one to master. However, a balayage MIGHT NOT be for everyone. Of course, foiling will be around forever and many guests do love the uniform look of foiled highlights and they know exactly just what to expect every time. If you hair has been previously dyed to a darker tone or has some red hues and you are looking to achieve cool/ash balayage, typically you will ether spend the entire day in the salon or not to ruin your hair, it will take 2-4 visits to the salon. Foils, guarantee a better lift. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever give the balayage a shot. We are the best hair salons highlights NYC balayage ombre highlights! We think that everyone could benefit from this service and should have their hair painted at least once. All of our stylists do agree that this technique is more fun to apply, and makes it more of a custom look in your hair because you don’t share your hair with anyone else.

The system of the balayage goes as such: the color is mildly applied at the base of your head and it gradually gets much heavier as the color shifts down to the ends of your hair. As your roots grows out, your hair is lightly concealed for a few months from the color that was lightly applied to your base. A balayage can range from very soft tones (1-3 levels lighter) or more high dimension tones (3+ levels lighter) based upon the look you are wanting to achieve and how quickly your hair reacts to the lighteners. A balayage is is commonly mistaken for a service that only blondes. That is absolutely incorrect! Blonde’s don’t ALWAYS have more fun! This service can be applied to blonde, brown or black, red, and other creative hair colors based upon consultation. Fine Artistik Salon is known for it’s outstanding signature balayage highlights and our salon is highly recommended when Googling for Best hair salons highlights NYC balayage ombre highlights!

So, Foils or Balayage? Many colorists—and their clients—are deeply passionate about the hair-lightening school they subscribe to. The former, more traditional technique involves painting thin strips of hair with bleach, then wrapping them in foil. The fancy French word means “sweeping” and entails just that: brushing bleach freehand onto the hair.

best balayage highlights nyc jacob amin fine artistik salon

But here’s the thing: In the right hands, foils and balayage create the exact same effect—beautiful highlights. Bad foils make color look solid and damage the hair. Bad balayage makes color look solid and damages the hair. Sun-kissed color is about dimension—weaving lowlights in with the blonde pieces—and you can achieve that with foils or balayage. Ultimately, it’s about the technician, not the technique.

Balayage is a technique used to create a natural-looking hair color that is not noticeable when grown out. The best part about this method is that it is custom-blended specifically for each person, so no new color is the same. It’s a perfect approach for those who desire a unique style because each of your friends could have the same color, but it would look different on everyone!

THE BEAUTY OF BLONDE BALAYAGE: When a blonde hue is mixed with a light brown or another blonde, we are getting a dimensional hair color with the depth and dynamics everyone seeks in modern hairstyles. Sometimes a stylist will use cellophanes, foils or mesh strips to separate the sections from bleeding on each other. That part doesn’t matter — it’s still called balayage. Every stylist has their own unique method to get the job done.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that balayage is old news or so not in style. It is and always will be. First of all, it’s not just a look. Balayage is a very difficult technique that stylists have to pay thousands of dollars (and hundreds of hours) to master and perfect. And while that might sound like a steep investment to learn something called “hair painting,” those hours and dollars are well spent! Stylists who are good at creating this ultra-versatile effect get to charge the big bucks. Especially because, when done right, balayage results in a very low-maintenance look, unlike your 6-8 week foil touch up. Some hair color brands and tones, might result in brassy/orange/brassy look, do NOT panic – it only means your hair color pulls red undertone pigments and you will either have to come back to re-balayage (this only applies if you are looking for that cool/ash tone on brunette color).

Finding a stylist who’s comfortable with the balayage technique can be difficult. Many stylists have been turned off of the application method after seeing bad results their first few sessions. That’s because, while balayage sounds simple, the effortlessness of the look depends on the stylist’s skill. Don’t’ get us wrong, foiling hair will always be around as well! There are different ways to get the job done and all can be extremely beautiful when applied well.

Best Color Corrective Hair Salons NYC. Best Color Correction Salons NYC!

Best Color Corrective Hair Salons NYC. Best Hair Color Correction Salons NYC! Highlights, Balayage, Brunette, Redhead, Blonde & More!

A “color correction” is meant to fix a color service that had undesirable results. Most people can understand that a color correction is needed for brassy, orange highlights, or at-home color that came out differently than desired (picture green or jet black hair instead of medium brown). Something that may seem like an easy fix or regular color service, though, isn’t always so cut-and-dry. When Googling, Fine Artistik Salon is known for being the best color corrective hair salons NYC and is highly recommended for being the best hair color correction salons NYC!

best color corrective hair salons nyc

Some color corrections can be simple, like doing a toner to cut out gold, but others can be a triple-process to lift dark color out. The latter is where time and cost can drastically increase.

Could the dark brown color you’ve been getting professionally colored for 6 years need to be “corrected” to get cool blonde highlights? Absolutely. Even though you’ve been getting desired results from your stylist for a long time, you need to remember that changing things up may be more difficult than you think.

In the salon environment, stylists see a color correction as when a guest wants to take previously colored hair at least 2 levels lighter or take previously colored or virgin hair at least 2 levels darker. Our L’Oreal Professionnel team are known for being the best color corrective hair salons NYC.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A COLOR CORRECTION?

When hair gets lightened, color is actually being taken out, not put in. Unfortunately, other things come out along with the color, such as protein, leaving the hair damaged. If it needs to be lightened again and again, that’s more structural elements that are being removed, too.

Many times, overzealous stylists think they can do a color correction in one sitting and end up damaging the hair structurally so much that the only fix is a substantial haircut. One way to protect your hair from a ton of damage is to spread out the service over a couple weeks. While you won’t leave the salon with the desired result in one day, you will leave with your hair still on your head. To minimize the damage and to ensure the integrity of the hair, we offer the Olaplex Treatment and the L’Oreal SMARTBOND Treatment.

best color correction hair salons nyc

If a color turned out too light or the guest wants to go a lot darker, the hair will need to be “filled.” “Filling” means depositing pigment back into the hair. This isn’t as simple as picking a color and putting it on; that’s how you end up with muddy or green colors. Once the hair is filled, it will need to be colored at least once more to get a desired shade.

Because a color correction can be more involved, the cost will most times be substantially higher. Some stylists charge $100-$200 per hour for a service that could take 5 hours to complete. That cost reflects the amount of color used and the amount of time your stylist needs to work on your hair.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO WARN YOUR STYLIST ABOUT A POTENTIAL COLOR CORRECTION?

While most color corrections aren’t that drastic, your stylist does need to know what to expect when a guest sits in their chair. If you scheduled a one-color process and it needs to be a four-process correction, the 2-hour appointment just doubled in length. Not only that, but the next two hours of the stylist’s day just had to be rescheduled on very short notice. Sometimes, as stylists because we are not sure of what to expect and to be considered to others, it’s best to let your stylist know of a possible color correction.

A good idea for anyone contemplating a drastic change (see: what a stylist sees as a correction), or anyone who had an unfortunate experience with color, is to contact their stylist before they schedule an appointment. He or she may want to see a picture of what you have color-wise, and what you want. An in-salon consultation may also be needed before your stylist will schedule the service. Please, do NOT use professional terms when booking your appointment. If you think you need a single process color & highlights, just say so because it is NOT considered a “double process”. If your hair is brassy/orange, don’t pretend that “just a toner” or a “simple glaze” will fix it. What is “just a toner” or a “simple glaze” to you, is an entire color correction to colorists.

Best Salon for Blonde Highlights NYC. Best Salon for Highlights NYC! Natural Highlights?

BEST SALON FOR BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS NYC! CONSIDERING HIGHLIGHTS BUT NOT SURE WHAT COLOR?

Deciding to highlight your hair is a big step. Deciding what kind of highlights you want is another big step. But sometimes, when you sit in that salon chair with a stylist rifling through your hair as if there are, in fact, actual secrets hidden in there, you can become flustered—and confused. Suddenly caramel could mean honey blonde and honey blonde can translate into bleach and oh god, what DID YOU JUST DO? To prevent the worst from happening—and get the best, head-turning highlights ever, we are here to guide you for the *exact* formula to peak highlight perfection! Our staff at Fine Artistik Salon are L’Oreal Professionnel hair color educators and we are salon is known for being the best salon for blonde highlights NYC or just simply best salon for highlights NYC!

For people who have a deep skin tone and darker hair color, it would be wise to keep the color on the deeper, richer side. It is often quite tricky to achieve a lighter and cooler color on these deeply hued strands, as they tend to pull red as you lighten them. For warmer complexions, go for cognac, maple and milk chocolate. Plum is also a great choice.

Medium complexions usually have the most versatility as they sit in the middle of the spectrum and encompass the most shade diversity. Eye color and complexion play a key role in determining the perfect pairing. For women with a warmer skin tone, hazel or green eyes and deeper hair color, maple, butterscotch, honey, and caramel tones play really well with their complexion and make their eyes appear brighter. We are the best salon for blonde highlights NYC!

For those with warm medium skin and olive complexions with dark hair and eyes, coffee hues are best. For the daring, red and coppery red can be an amazing life-changing option. Medium complexions that lean towards the cooler side do well with beige blondes, taupes, and sandy blondes.

Ladies with warmer skin tones tend to have a lighter natural hair color and look great in flaxen shades of soft natural golden, beachy blondes and peachy or apricot blonde. Different shades of honey look great in dark hair with a warm fair complexion. A cooler complexion with blue or light eyes can really pull of icy shades of blonde like platinum and vanilla that are often difficult to achieve with warmer skin and eye color.

While honeys and cognacs could work, for those with an inclination to go red, lean towards crimson and cranberry to offset your cooler skin tone.

But while hopefully this gave you the blueprint to amazing hair, don’t be afraid to yes – actually talk to your stylist. A good colorist should always take the time to discuss the shade suitability and maintenance with every client to ensure her desired color fits her lifestyle. Some shades, especially red or lighter shades on darker bases, require more salon visits and more frequent maintenance. Great hair color can make your complexion brighter and more youthful.

You have to watch out and do your research correctly! If for any reason a color is not as knowledgable or as familiar with colors, it might end up with you getting a color correction. Sometimes, it’s best to achieve your desired hair color in multiple visits to the salon. We always have a certain look and expectation on our mind, but sometimes the hair doesn’t allow for the desired color to be achieved in 1 visit. You do want healthy, shiny & vibrant hair! Highlights for hair can bring out your bone structure and make hair shimmer in the sun, but go the wrong route and the look can turn stripy or brassy very quickly.

We are often asked to give advice on choosing highlights for someone’s hair, and honestly we don’t mind doing it, because that’s what we do and for the most part, a lot of people tend to go to extremes when it comes to highlighting their hair. We will acknowledge that there have been periods where “high-contrast” highlighting was the norm. But these looks have never been remotely natural looking.

Best Balayage Highlights NYC & Best Hair Color Salon NYC! So, What Exactly Is Balayage And Its Hype?

Make an appointment with your stylist now! Balayage has been around for a while, but this timeless technique is creeping its way back into being one of the most popular hair color requests in salons today and it is NOT going away! Fine Artistik Salon, L’Oreal Professionnel hair colorists are here to share some professional insight on the booming hair trend, balayage. We are Voted Best Balayage Highlights NYC & Best Hair Color Salon NYC!

best balayage highlights nyc

So, what is balayage? Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint. It allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair color – similar to what nature gives us as children – with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. The principal idea being less is more when creating soft, natural looks.

How is balayage applied, what’s the process? Balayage is applied on the surface and not saturated through the section until the very tips, otherwise you would have a streak of color that isn’t vey soft at all. It can also be called a freehand technique because no foils are used to create the highlights. If your current hair color is a Brunette or has any red undertone pigments, we will most likely have to either double process your hair or balayage your hair 2-4 times to achieve a lighter color without red tones or an ash tone (this process isn’t done in 2-4 hours, some hair colors require color correction and 2-4 visits to the salon). Our L’Oreal Professionnel team of hair color educators are known for being the best. We are the best balayage highlights NYC salon!

What sets it apart from traditional hair coloring? It’s totally bespoke to you! A good balayage expert will be able to place the color to suit your skin tone, so it’ll look amazing and really light up your features.

What’s making it so popular recently? It’s a skilled technique that hasn’t been widely taught in the UK until recently. Now it’s becoming better known because all the models and A-listers are wearing it. Clients are seeing it on the catwalks and red carpets and want to get that finish rather than the uniform highlights that foils give.

best balayage highlights manhattan nyc salons

Does it require a lot of maintenance? Very little. It grows out beautifully and more naturally so you don’t get an obvious regrowth line and and can wear it for longer between appointments. All you really need to do is protect it as you would any other color: use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner, regular treatments and heat protection when styling.

Is it suitable for all hair types/lengths? It works on both light and dark hair, so anyone really. Both Rihanna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are great examples of balayage poster girls.

“Bronde” is currently a trending color & technique. Popular amongst celebs such as Jessica Alba and Olivia Palermo. It’s the perfect combination of brown and blonde tones. “Bronde” is perfect for darker haired clients who want to try out a lighter color, it can be warm neutral or cool. The choice is really between you and your colorist. Balayage pretty much works for all lengths except very short cropped hair.

What makes it timeless? It’s low maintenance, looks more bespoke, more natural, and is a modern technique that’s much more flattering. Healthy hair is attractive hair and that’ll never go out of fashion. As opposed to standard highlighting methods that use foil or a cap, balayage is strictly freehand where the color is painted on. You can amplify the hue to vary from a soft wash to bright and bold depending on your personal preference. Outside of very short cropped hair, it can work on a variety of hair lengths, textures and colors, making it truly universal and flattering for all women. Most are drawn towards it because the maintenance level is relatively low; many are able to go four months between hair coloring appointments.

Have you ever been told that you will need a color correction in order to achieve the color you want? You were probably left wondering, “What is a color correction, what does it entail, and do I even want one?”

So, not to launch into cosmetology school 101, we will try to break this down as simple as possible. Keeping in mind that every single color situation is different and that every color correction is extremely complex, there are two general types of color corrections (this is making it VERY general as there are limitless possibilities when it comes to color and correcting it). Both would be considered color corrections if you are changing previously artificially colored hair. However, virgin hair can also require color corrections as well. The first type of color correction is making dark color much lighter. The other makes light color much darker. Both may entail multiple color services, sometimes done all in one day and sometimes done over a period of weeks or months. Typically a color correction service can be very costly, time consuming, and sometimes can even be damaging to the hair. If you have colored your hair dark and now want to be a lot lighter all over, it is not as easy as it sounds. Trust us, we wish it was! Your hair might need to be “color cleansed” one or more times, then colored again to achieve a nice tone. If you have very light hair and want to go much darker, it may need to be colored two or more times in order for the color to stay. Your stylist will know which tones to put into the hair to help the color to last longer, be a pretty tone, and not fade right away. Best hair color correction salon NYC ombre highlights color balayage.

If you are looking for a big change in your hair color here is what we recommend: Call a hair salon and ask if they do complimentary hair color consultations. Most do. Let them know over the phone whether you have colored hair and that you are looking for a big change (whether you are wanting to go lighter or darker) and want to talk to your stylist about what options they recommend. This will allow the salon to book the correct amount of time for your consultation.

Bring to your consultation: Pictures of what you want to do to your hair and an honest list of your color history. Oh, and it always helps to be realistic! Anything that you have put on your hair, whether it is sun in, a shine treatment, a box color from the store, smoothing/straightening/perming/Brazillian Smoothers, etc. It is all part of your color history and your stylist needs to know! To minimize the damage we offer the OLAPLEX Treatment & SMARTBOND by L’Oreal Professionnel. After your consultation you should have a good idea of how you would like to proceed and the salon can book your future appointment accordingly. Color can be overwhelming but with the right team of hair professionals by your side you can achieve amazing results anytime you want to change your look!

Balayage is the art of painting on highlights or lowlights to hair and is becoming a popular and trendy hair coloring trend in the US & World Wide! Many of our clients prefer balayage to the more traditional foil highlights because they find balayage grows out better than the pin-sized highlights that foils give you, and it simply looks more natural. Fine Artistik Salon hair colorists are L’Oreal Professionnel balayage highlights educators. We are the best highlights salon NYC and our salon is highly recommended when Googling for best hair color salon NYC!

So are you a good candidate for balayage? Read on to find out…

SHOULD YOU DO FOILS OR BALAYAGE? If you are looking to take your hair from dark to light, foils may be your best bet. If you are looking to add sun-kissed natural looking color, balayage is a better option. Balayage is great for those face-framing highlights you may have read about. It’s absolutely the best method for getting the super popular beach look.

If you hate the maintenance of getting your hair colored every 6-8 weeks, balayage may be your better bet. Foil highlights have an obvious demarcation, so the new growth is obvious. Balayage is less obvious, so you can go longer between salon visits. It grows out beautifully. In fact, we have clients that only get balayage highlights 2-3 times a year. Yes, it’s that good! We are the best highlights salon NYC.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BALAYAGE? You may have heard of the term, “balayage blonde,” but balayage isn’t just for blondes. We use the technique on brunette and redheaded clients.

YOUR BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS OPTIONS: Because balayage gives the stylist freedom to paint color where she or he wants to, your stylist has many options with balayage.

Foils is a pretty structured look. With balayage, you have other options as well. You can do sweeps of color along the face for face-framing highlights. You can get highlights throughout the hair to add dimension and to show off a haircut.

CONSIDER GETTING MORE THAN ONE COLOR: If you study hair that’s never been colored, you’ll notice many different shades of color in the strands. The most natural looking highlights are those that are made up of different colors. You want variation and can get it with both foils and balayage.

You may even consider getting lowlights – color that’s about 2 shades darker than highlights. These are woven into the hair to give it dimension and depth.

The main difference between the two techniques is that the head is round and the foils are square. A square foil commits you to work within that square, whereas balayage allows you to move around freely carefully looking at the colors around the strand and working within the existing colors.

best hair color salon nyc best balayage highlights salons nyc

So rather than taking a section of hair in a square foil (keeping in mind that the head is round) we carefully take pieces of hair from the head. It can be a few strands, or a more chunky look. Some strands of color will be thick, some thin. It’s a wonderful technique because it allows the colorist total control.

With great control, we gently apply our lightener on from roots to ends or roots. If it’s just a color touch-up, we can apply the product to the roots only.

WHICH PROCESS IF FASTER? Speed really depends on the amount of hair and the desired effect. You can take a brunette and paint a few pieces of hair and change her life in 10 minutes or paint a blond and take one hour painting. Either way, it is going to take some time in the hairstylist’s chair.

CAN BALAYAGE WORK ON DARK HAIR? YES! Hair that is just one shade of color can look like a wig. No one wants that. Balayage can add dimension to even the darkest of hair colors.

Best Salon For Highlights in NYC. Best Highlights Salon NYC. Balayage!

Best Salon For Highlights In NYC. Best Balayage Highlights Salon NYC. The Do’s & Don’t’s!

Thinking of going lighter? Highlights for hair can bring out your bone structure and make hair shimmer in the sun, but go the wrong route and the look can turn stripy or brassy very quickly. Fine Artistik Salon is the best salon for highlights in NYC and our L’Oreal Professional colorists are award winning hair colorists for being the best balayage highlights salon NYC.

best salon for highlights in nyc

With highlights, placement is key. Always place the brightest and fattest highlights around the frame of the face. Highlights should be darker and sparser at the root and lighter at the tips—think ombré but way more subtle. The same way the sun would lighten hair naturally.

Over highlighted hair that reads like one color is unsophisticated and flat looking. Highlights should vary in size and lightness and should accent your base color, not overpower it. Speaking of base color, make sure your highlights match your hair’s tone. If you have a warm base, then you should have a warm highlights. If you have a cool base, then your highlights should be sandy or beige, and if it’s a neutral base color then your highlights can be either warm or cool.

Although dimension is good, too much variation can look unnatural. Never have more then three shades woven in your hair—a base, a highlight, and a low light—otherwise your hair color starts resembling something you’d see on a Rainbow Bright doll.

Highlights should be brighter and paler in the summer when you’re spending more time outdoors and the earth is closer to the sun, casting a more yellow light. Highlights should be deeper and more golden in the winter when we lose our summer glow and the earth is farther away from the sun, casting a bluer light.

Don’t ever have your highlights so light that they match your skin tone. This will make you look washed out. You always want contrast between your skin color and your hair color. Of course, you don’t want too much of a contrast between your base color and your highlights, either. Don’t ever have your highlights more than three levels lighter than the base color, or they’ll look stripy.

best highlights salon nyc

Your gorgeous, golden highlights are an investment, so treat them like you would any other prized possession. We suggests using a moisturizing, low-sulfate, color-safe shampoo and conditioner and washing hair less often.

There are (at least) a couple of ways to highlight your hair. The most common way to highlight hair—and the oldest trick in the book—involves applying bleach to the hair and wrapping it in aluminum foil and the latest: hair painting balayage highlights.

When done properly, this style of highlighting can look as natural or unnatural as you want. You can ask for chunky, obvious highlights if you’re looking for a dramatic effect.

However, if you really want your hair to be a work of art, balayage is your best bet. This method of highlighting hair has been around for literal decades (since the 70’s), but it’s just recently become incredibly popular, thanks to a bevy of celebrities who have been seen sporting the look.

Best Hair Color Salons NYC! Traditional Foil Highlights vs. Balayage Highlights. Which to choose?

The big debate: balayage highlights vs foils highlights? If you’re a ride-or-die full highlight girl, your stylist has most likely tried to transition your highlights to balayage. But, if you’re still in the dark about the painting technique, and iffy about whether or not it’s for you, we’ve got your answers. We are the Best Hair Color Salons NYC & Best Balayage Highlights Salons NYC!

best hair color salons nyc fine artistik salon nyc

SO, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TECHNIQUES?

Foil lightens the hair from the root to the ends while balayage allows the hair to be softer or natural at the root, and then gets progressively lighter as it travels through to the end. The grow out is less obvious with balayage, you can go months without touching it up. We feel sometimes traditional foils can look a little patterny and we like a more free style.

Although balayage is known to process without foils, we still like to use foils when we balayage “foliage” because the foil helps to speed up the process and can lift the hair lighter than balayage.

Foliage is the perfect combination of balayage and foiled highlights. Right now, we see that clients love and want ashy, platinum, sun-kissed hair and we feel that we can achieve this look by combining these two methods into foliage. At Fine Artistik Salon, we hand paint pieces of hair where we want it in a foil. We feel that using a foil can more consistently pull the clients’ hair past the brassy stage. We are the best hair color salons NYC! Our product line & color line is the best in the beauty industry today. We are a proud L’Oreal Professionnel salon in NYC.

WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE ONE METHOD OVER THE OTHER? WHAT IS THE END RESULT OF EACH?

The end result of a foil highlight is a more consistent and pattern-based look, while a balayage hand  will result in a look that is more free-hand and organic.

If you’re looking to have more of an all-over blonde look, we have more control when we paint in the foil, and can also control exactly how light or dark I want the blonde to be. The end result for traditional highlights is an overall lighter look. The end result for balayage is a slightly darker root melted into lighter ends, which we love!

If you’re more into an over all blonder look or all over highlights, we would go for the foils, because balayage a lot of the time won’t go as blonde as foils unless you are willing to spend a few extra hours in the salon so the colorist may re-balayage your hair to go lighter.

NOW THAT YOU HAVE A GOOD CONCEPT OF THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO TECHNIQUES, HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH METHOD IS THE BEST OPTION FOR YOU?

If you’re an effortless beauty or slightly edgy girl, we would recommend balayage, having your ends pop brighter. If you are a classic traditional girl, we would recommend getting foils, giving you an all over light look.

The method depends more on the client’s hair. If the hair is virgin, then balayage is a great option. For us, the foliage technique is better for achieving the ‘it-look.’ Blonder without brass.

best highlights nyc best balayage highlights salons nyc

WE ALL KNOW BLEACHING YOUR HAIR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE. IS THERE A METHOD THAT IS MORE OR LESS DAMAGING THAN THE OTHER?

Each process, foiled highlights and balayage, need not result in damaged hair as long as the colorist stays aware of the processing time required to maintain the healthy condition of the hair and the desired end result. If you’ve previously boxed dyed your hair or it’s been professionally colored with darker tones, to minimize the damage we offer the OLAPLEX Treatment & SMARTBOND Treatment by L’Oreal Professionnel.

When you do traditional highlights you are generally only lightening the new growth, but when you balayage you continue to lighten the already-lightened hair so it is more likely to become damaged. Our salon has been mentioned in numerous magazines as the best hair color salons NYC!

Either technique can lift the hair with minimal damage; That’s why it is critically important to see a professional colorist, someone that can guide you safely to beautiful hair color that doesn’t leave your hair damaged.

DEPENDING IF YOU ARE ON TOP OF YOUR SALON GAME GOING TO SEE YOUR STYLIST EVERY 4-6 WEEKS, OR YOU ARE A TWICE A YEAR GAL, WHAT DOES THE UPKEEP AND MAINTENANCE LOOK LIKE FOR EITHER OF THESE TECHNIQUES?

For traditional highlights, clients tend to come back between 6-8 weeks, but when balayage is done a client can go anywhere between 3-4 months. With balayage, you can go anywhere from 2-6 months without touching up. The longer you wait the more of the ombré look you will be creating, but if done correctly the grow out should seamless.

We suggests getting yourself on a routine schedule for any coloring service. Whenever you get your hair colored, it makes good sense to put yourself on a 3-month maintenance schedule. The length of the schedule can vary, of course, depending on how much of a “natural look” you want. If the look that interests you is more “un-natural” than natural, your hair will require significantly more maintenance.

Best Hair Color Correction NYC. What Is Hair Color Correction?

Best Hair Color Correction NYC. We are L’Oreal Professionnel Best Hair Color Correction Salons NYC!

A “color correction” is meant to fix a color service that had undesirable results. Most people can understand that a color correction is needed for brassy, orange highlights, or at-home color that came out differently than desired (picture green or jet black hair instead of medium brown). Fine Artistik Salon is the Best Hair Color Correction NYC salon! Something that may seem like an easy fix or regular color service, though, isn’t always so cut-and-dry.

Absolutely!

SO, WHAT HAPPENS DURING A COLOR CORRECTION? When hair gets lightened, color is actually being taken out, not put in. Unfortunately, other things come out along with the color, such as protein, leaving the hair damaged. If it needs to be lightened again and again, that’s more structural elements that are being removed, too. To minimize the damage in the hair  and to maintain its integrity we offer the OLAPLEX treatment and L’Oreal Professionnel Smartbond treatment.

First, if you are a blonde and have multiple shades and toner in your hair that are brassy (usually that happens if you keep switching between hair colorists or if the bleach wasn’t left long enough). Don’t assume that a full head of highlights will fix that. Certain blonde shades are extremely difficult to achieve or correct. Brunettes & Red heads are a bit easier but definitely not easy! Any color is a challenge.

While most color corrections aren’t that drastic, your stylist does need to know what to expect when a guest sits in his or her chair. If you scheduled a one-color process and it needs to be a four-process correction, the 2-hour appointment just doubled in length. Not only that, but the next two hours of her day just had to be rescheduled on very short notice.

HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS TECHNIQUE: Lowlights and highlights are essentially partial coloring techniques, adding a different shade to certain strands of hair so your barnet ends up having depth, texture and various complementary hues.

The technique used differs from block color hair dyeing and involves sectioning off the hair to target the parts you want transformed. This way you can have a multi-hued more natural looking finish. Celebs like Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lawrence are great ambassadors for highlights and lowlights as their hair is always full of light and dark accents which adds body, movement and interest to their lush locks.

To achieve highlights we will use a paste usually containing a bleaching agent and peroxide. We then apply it to the hair using a special brush and either foils (strips of foil or plastic used to separate strands of hair from the rest) or saran wrap for a balayage affect.

Unlike a full hair color (usually called permanent or semi-permanent dyeing) you can choose to have a full-head or half-head of highlights. This means you can simply have the top of your hair dyed leaving the underneath natural – although if you wear your hair up a lot, then this doesn’t look great. You can also have a T-section or infills done to maintain the look as your roots begin to show. This means only a small section of the roots on the top of your head are re-dyed. We are a L’Oreal Professionnel Hair Salon in NYC!

WHY HAVE HIGHLIGHTS OR LOWLIGHTS? Highlights or lowlights are perfect if you want to give your barnet a bit of a color boost, they’re also a great way to start off dyeing your hair for the first time as you retain some of your natural shade too.

They allow you to have a sun-kissed effect with lighter strands running through your hair in a just-back-from-holiday hue. They’re also great for lighting up the face; illuminating and injecting life into your hair’s color can work wonders for your skin tone! It’s advised to have them done before the summer to prevent the color changing after exposure to the sun.

Note that lowlights and highlights aren’t the same as streaks, which can be also done with saran wrap or foil. Streaks have a larger, more blocky effect on the hair than lowlights and highlights and are much more noticeable – the benefit of highlights and lowlights is that they have a really natural finish.

LOWLIGHTS VS. HIGHLIGHTS: Lowlights involve darkening strands of hair by using colors that are darker than your natural color. In contrast, highlights use colors that are lighter than your natural shade.

WHO CAN CONSIDER HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS? People with all hair types can have lowlights and highlights, whether it’s straight, curly or frizzy. On curls, this technique gives more depth and on the straightest of hair, it gives the illusion of more volume.

It’s true that blonde lowlights and highlights are a big trend but more chocolatey tones are also very popular – think Kristen Stewart or Mila Kunis.

As well as the classic lowlight/highlight technique, there are variations to play with too. “Dip-dye” AKA “Ombre” hair color, which involves lowlights on the roots and highlights on the ends, is one trend that keeps on going – and is a fun way to play with color – just check out Olivia Palermo!
